On Thursday, May 7, Gleaners Community Food Bank will host a rally to mark the start of its 23rd Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The nation’s largest one-day food drive will take place on Saturday, May 9.

At 9 a.m. on Thursday morning, a caravan of letter farriers and trucks will leave Detroit’s NALC Branch 1 Union Hall at 1400 Trumbull and drive to Gleaners Detroit Distribution Center.

This Saturday, May 9, letter carriers nationwide will collect non-perishable food items left at all residential mailboxes. The items should not be expired, require refrigeration, or be packaged in breakable containers.

Residents of Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Livingston, and Monroe counties are encouraged to place food items in a sturdy bag next to their mailboxes before 9 a.m. Letter carriers will collect food donations during their regular postal routes.

Food collection trucks will wait at local post offices to deliver food to one of Gleaners’ distribution centers.

“Each year, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive continues to be a wonderful opportunity for our community to take part in feeding our most vulnerable citizens,” said Gleaners President Gerry Brisson. “Last year’s food drive provided 1 million meals to hungry neighbors in southeast Michigan. I’m so humbled by the generosity of our community and grateful for the tremendous support and dedication of our letter carriers, sponsors and volunteers.”

Residents in Southeastern Michigan can get mobile reminders for the May 9 food drive by texting GLEANERS to 51555. Message and data rates may apply.
