Mark your calendars. Murals in the Market will return to Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market September 15-24. More than 50 local and international muralists will be painting live throughout the district during the event.

This year, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Eastern Market Corporation are presenting sponsors of Murals in the Market. Tyree Guyton, a local Detroit artist and creator of the Heidelberg Project, will join Murals in the Market for a new activation.
Detroit’s only international mural festival, Murals in the Market is a unique opportunity for Detroiters to participate in fun, family-friendly art events and to see muralists work. There will be live music, children’s workshops, community events, and artists talks. The market will also host a series of events including discussion panels with culturally significant photographers and artists, and cultural tour with Detroit’s Slow Roll bike tours, art exhibitions, and an Eastern Market block party. All events will be free and open to the public.
Artists from Detroit will come together to enhance Eastern Market and depict the heritage of Detroit through their murals. International artists from Australia, Singapore, and Paris will join the fun and help transform Eastern Market into a must-see arts destination.
“The festival is a great way to showcase Detroit’s creative spirit, while bringing more life to Eastern Market and encouraging people to connect with their city and each other,” said Katy Locker, Knight Foundation program director for Detroit.
Murals in the Market will help expand Eastern Market’s walkable footprint, introducing visitors to areas of the district that are often unseen and underutilized. There are already 75 public murals in the Eastern Market District, and this year’s Murals in the Market intends to add to that number.
The 75 existing murals were curated and produced by 1xRUN and the company’s fine art gallery Inner State over the past five years. In total, the company has produced more than 100 murals throughout the City of Detroit. With the creation of these murals, each area has seen a significant visual impact on the surrounding neighborhood as well as increased traffic, additional economic development, and increased safety.
The Adopt a Mural program will return with this year’s Murals in the Market, so local businesses and arts supporters will have the opportunity to sponsor an individual mural from their favorite artist and be commemorated with a special plaque.
