Play episode

Detroit’s going to play host to not one, but two, presidential candidates on Saturday, September 3 – both at establishments headed by African-Americans.

The Green Party is going to have a rally with their presidential candidate, Dr. Jill Stein, at Bert’s Warehouse in Eastern Market (2739 Russell Street in Detroit), along with her VP pick, Ajamu Baraka. The event will run from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Press folks from the campaign tell Daily Detroit in an email that they “will speak on how the Green New Deal will address injustice, social and environmental concerns that residents of Detroit and Michigan deal with on a daily basis. They will address the emergency manager takeovers of Michigan cities and school systems, the horrendous on-going Flint water crisis and water shutoffs in Detroit. The unjust Incarceration of Rev. Ed Pinkney of Benton Harbor will also be raised.”

Motown legend Martha Reeves along with Sturge Moreland (formerly with the Temptations), Verdena “Polly” Taylor, Jose Riojas and others will provide the entertainment.

Republican nominee Donald Trump, on the other hand, will be going to church. He’s going to attend 11 a.m. service at Great Faith Ministries, the megachurch at 10735 Grand River in Detroit headed by Bishop Wayne T. Jackson. The Freep says he’s not going to speak, but may meet with selected churchgoers. He will also tape an interview where, according to the Detroit News, Trump will be asked “Are you racist?” to be aired later on the Christian TV channel, The Impact Network, founded by Jackson.
