Innovative Write A House Expands Into Detroit’s North End

Sep 14, 2016 by Shianne Nocerini

I’m a fan of the nonprofit Write A House. They have done some remarkable work on the border of Detroit and Hamtramck, putting people in formerly blighted homes and adding to our literary scene at the same time.

So when I heard that they are now expanding into the North End of Detroit I figured I’d pass along the information.

If you’ve never heard of Write a House, they purchase blighted homes from the Detroit Land Bank, and then they renovate them with the help of Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ). Once the houses are finished with they will be given away to a writer to live in.

The announcement came this week that the organization has purchased two vacant lots and two abandoned homes last month from the Detroit Land Bank.

Write A House also announced that they will be fundraising the entire month of October in order to raise the money to renovate these houses.

Octopia! A Moveable Feast will be held on Saturday, October 1 at the Power House Building in the Herman Kiefer Health Complex, just west of the Lodge and north of New Center.

The evening will be filled with unlimited food and cocktails provided by chef Hassan Musselmani, owner of The Drunken Rooster, as well as Gold Cash Gold and Our/Detroit Vodka.

The evening starts at 6:30 PM and will continue until 10:00 PM. Make sure to be dressed in your finest black attire. Tickets for the event are $125 per person and can be purchased online.

If yoga is your thing, you also have the opportunity to do yoga inside of the Power House Building on Saturday, October 1. Yoga, Writers, and Revitalization will begin at 11:00 AM and goes until 12:15 PM. Come for the yoga, stay for the Detroit Institute of Bagels. Admission is $10, but you can also donate more money if so inclined.
