Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program is a special resource for the kids in Detroit. They have continued to make a positive impact on children ages 8 through 18 since 2007, and they’re about to do another cool thing.
On the weekend of December 17 and 18, the Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program (DBGYP) will be hosting the 2017 USA Boxing Michigan Silver Gloves Tournament. This is the second year DBGYP will host the Michigan Silver Gloves Tournament.
The two day tournament is the first tournament of a three level series. Youth boxers from around Michigan are hoping to make it to the regional tournament and then to move into the national tournament.
“Advancing boxers represent our state when they compete at the regional tournament in Philadelphia, or national tournament in Kansas City,” said Carolyn Geck, director of development at Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program. “Detroit boxers have typically been part of advancing teams in the Silver Gloves Tournament.”
There will be four age and weight divisions; 8-9 year-olds, 10-11 year olds, 12-13 year olds and 14-15 year olds.
Not only is this a great opportunity for those who are participating in the tournament, but it’s good for Detroit as well.
“The Michigan Silver Gloves tournament brings youth boxers, coaches, families, and spectators from throughout the state of Michigan to Detroit for two exciting days,” said Geck. “We encourage guests to experience the city while they are here. Some stay in local hotels, go out to eat and see the city throughout the weekend.”
If the boxers are registered before December 14 it is $5, the price goes up to $10 after December 14. If you are interested in registering someone or would like to sponsor a boxer you can call Carolyn Geck at (313) 209-3029.
If you would like to attend the tournament tickets are $15 per day or $25 for a weekend pass.
The tournament starts at 7 a.m. with weigh ins, and boxing begins at 1 p.m.
