Detroit Eye Candy: A Beautiful Timelapse Video Of Detroit Shot Over Two Years

Play episode

Detroit’s beautiful from the top of the Penobscot Building in downtown Detroit.

That, and many other Detroit scenes including Belle Isle, are in this three minute video called “Rebirth” by YouTube user Mike Tokarz.

According to his description:

“I’m here to show you that Detroit is not a city of crime and ruins, but a diverse city of life, new ideas, and an abundant variety of scenery.

Shooting for this video took place over the course of around 2 years, with countless hours processing. The final product is made up of roughly 5,000 individual photographs, cut down from over 25,000 frames captured over the last two years.”

If you can’t get enough Detroit Timelapse videos, especially ones focused on hope, try this one from awhile back.

  • so this is what comes after ruin porn. shall we call it gentriporn? some jackass from the burbs comes to downtown, the riverfront, belle isle and midtown to show us the “Beauty” of Detroit with contextual “ruin porn” shots in areas directly adjacent to the heavily gentrified “New Detroit” neighborhoods. All of these wannabes come into the city via the freeways, missing out on the real struggles, ruins and the beauty of people surviving against the aids, to come shoot a bunch of masturbatory timelapses.

Rebirth. Hardly. Your photography lacks truth, it’s like choosing a neglected, sick and starving person holding a bouquet of roses as your subject and choosing to take all of your photos of the petals of the flower, ignoring the humanity holding that rose up.

Show me your best shot from Livernois and Joy and then you can tell us about the beauty of the city. Until then go back to the ‘burbs.
