Your City 5: Things To Do In Detroit For The Weekend Of August 18-20

You are here: Home / City Of Detroit / Your City 5: Things To Do In Detroit For The Weekend Of August 18-20

Aug 16, 2017 by Shianne Nocerini

Well readers, the weekend is almost here. You know what that means right?

This City 5 round up for what to do this weekend in Detroit is here.

There are a lot of great events happening this weekend, and none of them involve cars or cruising.

Rockin’ on the Riverfront with Everclear

This Friday is the final night in the 12th Annual Chevy Rockin’ on the Riverfront and the band Everclear will be performing.

The concert is free and will be held at the GM Plaza behind the Renaissance Center.

Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs and blankets.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.

Dream of Detroit Street Fair

This family friendly street fair will have loads to do on Saturday.

The fair is being hosted thanks to a partnership between the Muslim Center, UDA Free Community Health Clinic, the HUDA Urban garden and the Detroit Repertory Theatre and the community organization Dream of Detroit.

The fair will be held along two blocks of Woodrow Wilson Street.

There will be a marketplace with vendors selling food, drinks, clothing, and other items.

There will be a free all-day health fair hosted by the UDA Clinic.

Live music and theatrical performances.

There is so much more planned during this street fair. You can find out all of the other events here.

Hours: 10:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.

The Muslim Center is located at 1605 West Davison in Detroit.

Ford Fun Free Day at the Michigan Science Center

If you haven’t listened to the They Might Be Giants album called Here Comes Science I suggest you do. We listen to it a lot in my house, because Science Is Real.

Anyway, this Saturday the Michigan Science Center will have free admission thanks to a generous contribution by Ford.

If you plan on heading down to the MSC be sure to sign up for tickets for a specific time of day. This helps with the flow of traffic through the science center.

The Michigan Science Center will be open from 10 a.m. — 6 p.m.

The MSC is located at 5020 John R Street in Detroit.

World Honey Bee Day at the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center

Bees are some fascinating creatures. If you have ever wanted to learn more about the life cycle of the honey bee then you should go to the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center.

Brian Peterson-Roest from Bees in the “D” will be speaking.

Attendees will become a member of a honey bee hive and learn about the lives of a honey bee.

This event would be great for adults and kids.

The program starts at 1 p.m.

The DNR Outdoor Activity Center is located at 1801 Atwater Street in Detroit.

35th Annual African World Festival Detroit

This free three day festival will be held at The Wright Museum.

There will be a ton of performances, poetry reading, arts and crafts, African drumming and dance.

You can find the entire schedule of events here.

Come hungry because there will be plenty of ethnic foods. There will also be vendors selling all types of items.

Friday through Sunday 11 a.m.-11 p.m.

The Wright Museum is located at 315 East Warren in Detroit.

Bonus

Motor City Soul Club August Soul Stomp

You don’t think we wouldn’t include our favorite monthly soul party would you?

This month they are doing things a bit differently. They will have eight DJ’s throughout Saturday night. Four DJ’s inside the Marble Bar and four DJ’s on the back patio.

The Soul Stomp is always free, which is a great deal. Hours are from 10 p.m.-1 a.m., so you get three hours of making your dancing shoes work like they’ve never worked before.

The Marble Bar is located at 1501 Holden Street in Detroit.
