Your City 5: Fun Things To Do In Detroit For The Weekend Of March 16-18

Play episode

Hello! I hope your week has been going well. To be honest, I have kind of been riding the struggle bus this week. What can I say, Daylight Saving has kicked by butt.

Anyway, it looks like it should be a little bit warmer this weekend. It’s suppose to be in the 50s on Sunday. The official beginning of spring is next week after all. Let’s see if it becomes reality when it comes to the weather.

St. Patrick’s Day Kickoff for the Downtown Street Eats

I know it doesn’t feel like it right now but spring will be here soon. This means that those of you who spend your days downtown will have the chance to grab some grub from the Downtown Street Eats program.

The kickoff event will take place on Friday, March 16. There will be ten food trucks set up in Cadillac Square, the Woodward Esplanade, Spirit of Detroit Plaza, and Beacon Park.

Since St. Patrick’s Day is on Saturday the food trucks will have special Irish-inspired dishes in addition to their usual menus.

There will also be two live performances from Flanagan O’Hare School of Irish Dance in Cadillac Square and Spirit of Detroit Plaza.

Who Run The World Opening Weekend

Planet Ant has a new play starting this week, and it sounds pretty freaking awesome.

The new play is called Who Run The World and it is set in 2040 in a world where the women have revolted and pushed all those with toxic masculinity out of power.

Just reading the description of this play makes me want to scream out Girl Power and bust down the patriarchy.

Anyway, the play will run March 16 through April 7.

Tickets are $20 a piece, but if you go on opening weekend tickets are half off. I highly suggest you buy them online in advance.

When: Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 7:00 p.m.

Where: 2357 Caniff Street Hamtramck, Michigan 48212

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament

March Madness is here y’all. Which means there are going to be people talking about brackets and basketballs and free throw lines.  Let’s face it, my eyes kind of glaze over when people start talking about basketball.

But if you like dribbling and all that jazz then you should know that the first and second round games will be played at Little Caesars Arena on Friday and Sunday.

You can buy tickets here.

If you have some free time on Thursday you can check out the practices from 11:00 a.m.-6:20 p.m. The practice sessions are free to attend.

You can also watch the games in a heated tend in Beacon Park on Friday and Saturday. You can find out more here.

Come out to the legendary Nemo’s to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Women of Detroit Blues Mothers and Daughters

If you are in the mood for an afternoon of the blues then you should head over to the Scarab Club on Sunday.

The Detroit Blues Heritage Series will feature performances by a mother and a daughter who both perform the blues.

Detroit vocalist Karen Lawrence (aka Zoom) took a break from performing to raise a family, but she has returned to the stage.

Her daughter Airey B will be opening for her.

There is a suggested donation of $5 to attend the performance.
