I can’t be the only one who is feeling the effects of these April snow showers. I know the snow isn’t sticking down here, but in other parts of the state they are getting buried in snow.
I’m ready for spring to really show up — and for Detroit Tigers games to stop getting postponed.
Let’s look forward to the weekend.
The Populace Unveiling inside the Siren Hotel
The Wurlitzer Building has been given a new life as the Siren Hotel. I remember walking past the formerly crumbling structure with my band of fellow downtown drinking derelicts when I was in my early 20s.
It’s been a long time coming, but the building has been renovated into a fun and stylish boutique hotel.
I’ve heard a lot of great things about the food and beverage options inside the hotel. I’m personally eager to checking them all out. Especially Albena and the Candy Bar.
This weekend is the debut of Populace Coffee Detroit which is located in the lobby of the Siren. Come check out the new digs and try a coffee.
When: Friday, April 6 through Sunday, April 8 from 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (Populace will be open daily from 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.)
Where: The Siren Hotel is located at 1509 Broadway Street
Detroit, Michigan 48226
Planter Day at Corbé
We might have had some snow showers today, but I keep reminding myself that it is spring. Which means giving your green thumb something to work on.
The Detroit-based ceramic design studio Corbé will be hosting Planter Day this Saturday.
Come check out some of the cool planters they have created for all of your pretty plants. They will also have plants that you can pick out and plant in your new pretty planter.
I’d get there early to get the best pick of planters.
When: Saturday, April 7 from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Where: Corbé 611 W. Philadelphia Street Detroit, Michigan 48202
The Billie Holiday Revue featuring Sky Covington at Cliff Bells
Billie Holiday was a trailblazing woman in the world of music. Her birthday would have been this Saturday, April 7.
To honor this amazing songstress Sky Covington will be performing the Billie Holiday Revue at Cliff Bells this Saturday.
Come out and celebrate the life and music of Lady Day.
There is a $10 cover and you should probably call (313) 961-2543 to get a reservation.
When: Saturday, April 7 at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Cliff Bells 2030 Park Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48226
Our History in the D: The Stories of Gay Life and Gay Bars in Detroit
If you are in the LGBTQ community or are an ally to the community I suggest checking out this event at The Olympia Theater and Mengos.
Our History in the D will include an oral retelling of Detroit’s gay bar scene from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s.
Dr. Tim Retzloff is a gay historian and he will be the moderator for the panel. The panel will feature Ms. Mary Sappington (Mary Metra), The Lady T Tempest, DJ Stacey “Hottwax” Hale (here’s Sven’s great interview with her on our Happy Hour podcast), Palmer Park Historian Doug haller, Tribe President Mike Weise, and Torchy.
These trailblazers helped pave the way for LGBTQ equality in the United States.
There will also be gay bar memorabilia on display thanks to the Detroit Gay Bar Preservation Project.
When: Saturday, April 7. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the panel starts at 7:00 p.m. Stick around for bar stories and cocktails after the panel.
Where: The Menjos Complex – Olympia Theater 940 W. McNichols Road Detroit, Michigan 48203
Three Stooges Festival at the Redford
I’m going to give credit to my mom for reminding me about the Three Stooges Festival at the Redford.
The Three Stooges are pretty iconic, so I don’t think I need to sell you all on why you should go to the festival.
Who doesn’t like watching three grown men hit each other on the head with a hammer?
Anyway, tickets for the festival are only $5 so it’s a great deal.
When: Friday, April 6 at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Redford Theater 17360 Lahser Road Detroit, Michigan 48219
