Your City 5: Things To Do In Detroit For The Weekend Of May 4-6

Play episode

Whoa buddy, this weekend is popping! I guess that is what happens now that the weather is beautiful.

Saturday is not only Cinco de Mayo but it’s also the Kentucky Derby. Since the City 5 only covers Detroit, I can’t tell you to go to Northville Downs to bet on the race. But I mean, it’s The Derby … so just go put down a $2 exacta box on a three horses and see how it goes.

I had a really hard trying to narrowing down the events for this weekend. I couldn’t cut any of them, because they are all so great. So, you guys get a City 7 this week. That’s right, I’ve given you two bonus events.

Let’s get this thing started, I’ve already been really long winded.

Have a great weekend!

Jane’s Walk

This weekend is supposed to be pretty nice, so why not get out and stretch those legs.

While you’re out be sure to check out one of the many Jane’s Walks that are happening this weekend. There are walks happening in these neighborhoods Palmer Park, Woodbridge, Cultural Center, Cass Corridor, and Hope Village.

You can find out all of the details over on the dedicated Jane’s Walk post.

When: Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6; multiple times

Where: Multiple locations

Koi Festival

Spring time means that the Belle Isle Conservatory will be throwing its annual Koi Festival at the Belle Isle Aquarium.

Over the winter the koi have been stuck indoors, but now that it is getting warmer they can be moved out to the beautiful pond between the aquarium and Anna Scripts Whitcomb Conservatory.

May 5 is also Japan’s Children’s Day. So they will have a selection of traditional Japanese games, music and martial arts.

This event is free and family friendly.

When: Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Where: Belle Isle Aquarium 900 Inselruhe Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48207

Detroit Drinks Prohibition Party

This week is pretty historic here in Michigan because 100 years ago Michigan banned booze.

So, if you want to go back in time to the days where booze was banned. Where you had to know the special knock to get into that speak-easy then you should check out this event.

You’ll have to go over to my old stomping grounds to the Ye Old Tap Room. They will be throwing the Detroit Drinks Prohibition Party.

There will be plenty of great music from the 1920s and 1930s. Come dressed in your best vintage flapper and gangster garments for a costume contest. Just a suggestion, I’d leave the Tommy guns at home.

Did I mention that beers are only .50 cents?

When: Saturday, May 5 from 8 p.m.-2 p.m.

Where: Ye Old Tap Room 14915 Charlevoix Street Detroit, Michigan 48215

All Things Detroit

This Sunday All Things Detroit will be returning to Eastern Market. Just in time for Mother’s Day.

You don’t think I’d forget to remind you to pick out something nice for all the mom’s in your life did you?

You should know the drill by now, All Things Detroit is packed with some of the coolest small businesses out there. Some of my favorites are Bon Bon Bon, Motor City Creations, and The Mighty Mitten.

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $15 for Beat the Crowd tickets. I suggest the Beat the Crowd tickets every time. It gets you in to browse before the throngs of people show. Plus, you get a goodie bag. You can buy tickets here, or at the door.

When: Sunday, May 6 from 9:30-4:00 p.m.

Where: Sheds 3,4, and 5 at Eastern Market 2934 Russell Street Detroit, Michigan 48207

The Eastern Artist Market

If you are still ready to shop til you drop on Sunday, I have another artist market which is right down the street from All Things Detroit.

Why not stretch out your legs (and wallets) and walk down to The Eastern for their inaugural Artist Market.

Once again … Mother’s Day is next Sunday. I’m not above beating this into your head.

There will be a 38 artists, crafters, and creative people of all types selling their creations.

If you’re in the mood for a cocktail while you shop, you are in luck because there is a cash bar. There will also be food and ice cream for sale.

It’s free to attend.

When: Sunday, May 6 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Where: The Eastern 3434 Russell Street Detroit, Michigan 48207

The photo will take place at promptly 6:20 p.m. on Friday night, so be there or be square.
