Your City 5 Things To Do This Weekend In Detroit: September 21-23

You are here: Home / City 5 / Your City 5 Things To Do This Weekend In Detroit: September 21-23

Sep 19, 2018 by Shianne Nocerini

It seems like everyone else is already for fall to be here. People keep talking about Pumpkin Spice Lattes and sweater weather.

But I have held out on getting anything autumnal until the actual autumn equinox. I don’t know why I have been such a stickler for holding on to the last remnants of summer, but I’ve been pretty hard core this year.

But, this Saturday is the first official day of autumn. So, I guess I better stop digging in my heels and pull out those riding boots.

There are a ton of cool things happening this weekend. I know that I’m looking forward to hitting a few of these events.

Let’s get on to it.

HAMILTUNES: AN AMERICAN SINGALONG!

Do you eat, sleep, and breath Hamilton? Are you patiently waiting for the show to come to the Fisher Theatre in 2019? Do you think you’re the next Daveed Diggs and can spit out all those sick Lafayette and Jefferson raps? Do you wish you could be one of the Schuyler Sisters … even Peggy?

If you said yes to any of those questions, then you should probably go to the Hamiltunes singalong on Friday night in New Center Park.

Sorry if I just Hamil-splaned you, it’s a bad habit of mine. Can you tell I really love Hamilton?

Broadway in Detroit and the Masonic Youth Theatre of Detroit are putting on the free event to celebrate Hamilton coming to Detroit in the spring of 2019.

It will be a karaoke format, so everyone can sing along.

So, grab a friend and your blanket and head over to the park for some singing.

When: Friday, September 21 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m.

New Center Park is located 2998 West Grand Boulevard
Detroit, Michigan 48202

That Big 80s Party

DJ Dave Paul is coming back to Detroit this Friday for another round of That Big 80s Party at El Club.

You know what that means right? It’s time to pull out your day glow tops, banana clips, and Stiff Stuff Hairspray.

There will be a mix of all genres of music, the only requirement is that it was produced in the 1980s.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

When: Friday, September 21 from 9:30 p.m.-2 a.m.

El Club is located at 4114 Vernor Highway, Detroit, Michigan 48209

Dear Fall: Love, Midtown

Midtown will be hopping on Saturday during the Love, Midtown event.

Over 30 shops, restaurants, and businesses around Midtown will take part in the event. Most will have specials, sales, live music and kid-friendly activities.

My number one place to stop during the event is Sfumato Fragrances. They will be celebrating turning 5 years old.

If you have little kids then I suggest heading over to Nora for a little story time. Channel 4’s Devin Scillian will be doing a book reading there at 11:00 a.m. Did you know he wrote children’s books? He really is a Jack of all trades.

You have my full permission to enjoy all things fall on Saturday.

When: Saturday, September 22 from 12 p.m.-8 p.m.

Multiple locations

Murals in the Market

The fourth annual Murals in the Market is currently going on in Eastern Market. More than 50 local and international artists have been creating amazing murals all week.

I couldn’t be more happy that this event takes place within our fine city. It was recently named one of the “Top 5 Mural Festivals in the World” by Smithsonian.

If you can make it out to Eastern Market After Dark on Thursday, I highly suggest it. It’s always a fun time.

It looks like the guided tours are sold out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go out on your own to look at all of the murals. You can download a map here, or pick up a printed map in Eastern Market.

Murals in the market runs through Saturday.

Junior League of Detroit’s Designers Show House Tour

I had a chance to check out the Designers Show House at the Fisher Mansion in Boston Edison last week. It was pretty sweet. I wish I could pick a favorite room for you, but it is just too hard. I will say that I really liked the Garden of Eden room on the second floor.

This year 40 of the most illustrious designers and landscapers from around the country came to work on the former home of auto baron Charles T. Fisher.

The home was purchased in 2017 by actor, author, and philanthropist Hill Harper.

Tickets to the Designers Show House Tour are $40 per person. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go toward supporting various community programs.

Hours: Thursday through Saturday 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. — 5 p.m.

The Charles T. Fisher Mansion is located at 670 West Boston Boulevard Detroit, Michigan 48202

Bonus

Pewabic Stein Launch

This Saturday Pewabic will be unveiling a new stein during their Oktoberfest celebration. You can see photos of the new steins here, I really like both of the colors.

Eastern Market Brewing will be at the pottery with their small batch Kiln Bier which is an ale-lager hybrid that was brewed for Pewabic.

There will be live music from Steve Jarosz as well.

This event is free to attend, but you will have to BYOS (buy your own stein). They will have Solo cups as well.

When: Saturday, September 22 from 12 p.m.-6 p.m.

Pewabic is located at 10125 E. Jefferson Ave., Detroit, Michigan 48214
