Let’s Taco ‘Bout The Top 10 Taco Joints In Metro Detroit

Play episode

There is something satisfying about a street taco. Just a few warm corn tortillas filled with the meat of your choice (for me, it’s usually carne asada) topped with onion, cilantro and a squeeze of lime.

So, we got the podcast team together to talk about tacos. We debated and picked out top ten places around metro Detroit to grab some tacos.

Let’s get on with the list.

1. Taqueria El Rey

Taqueria El Rey is one of the best places to grab a taco in Southwest Detroit. It’s not a place with a decor that was designed by some architectural firm. It is a place you get damn good tacos. The tacos here are always tasty and everything on the menu is really reasonably priced. Just a word to the wise, bring cash because they don’t take plastic.

2. Taqueria Mi Pueblo

You might have to wait for a table at this popular Springwells restaurant, but it’s well worth the wait. There are a lot of tasty things on the menu at Taqueria Mi Pueblo, but the steak and chicken tacos are among the best.

If you’re in a hurry for tacos head down the road to Taqueria Mi Pueblo Express.

3. Los Galanes

It is no secret that Los Galanes is one of the mainstays in Mexicantown, it’s been in business for over 50 years. You have a choice between Mexican tacos or crispy tacos at Los Galanes.

4. El Parian

There are multiple locations for this food truck, but I’ve only been to the one parked in the lot of a car wash surrounded by a sprawling freight rail yard. It’s brutal, with noise and wafting diesel fumes, but the tacos are entirely worth it, with heavenly charred carnitas, aromatic corn tortillas and even a nice bonus vinegar slaw.

5. Taco Tienda Mexicana

This little taco spot is tucked away in the corner of a strip mall along John R. Don’t let the fact that this place half restaurant half grocery store turn you away. The tacos are great. Be sure to try the sauces that they bring to the table. Also, grab a side of rice, it’s delicious.

6. O.W.L.

At O.W.L., you don’t choose the tacos. The tacos choose you. The daily taco makes ordering food simple, all you have to do is walk up and say “give me the tacos” and you’re good to go.

7. Carnival Market

Located in Pontiac, Carnival is a full-service grocery store that also has a restaurant inside. You can walk out with three tacos, beans and rice for 7 bucks. Not to mention, you can make the tacos “gringo style” with lettuce, tomato and sour cream for those of you who can’t get down with cilantro and onion.

8. The Taco Stand

The menu is small, but that means they are focused on making great food. While you are at The Taco Stand getting your fill of tacos, throw in an order of the Carne Asada fries.

There are two locations:

20115 Goodard Road Taylor, Michigan 48180

9. Galindo’s

The tacos at Galindo’s in Southgate are tasty and full of flavor. If you’re not in the mood for tacos there are 16 different Tortas on the menu.

10. Bakersfield

Say what you want about it being a chain, the tacos at Bakersfield are really good. There are plenty of options for toppings, which make the tacos interesting. Plus, the margaritas are bomb.
