Things To Do In Detroit This Weekend: Your City 5 For February 1 – 3

Jan 31, 2019 by Shianne Nocerini

I hope that you have all been keeping warm and staying out of the Polar Vortex that has been hitting the region since Monday.

If you’re feeling a bit of cabin fever, I have a list of great things to do around town this weekend.

Let’s get this show on the road, shall we?

Opening: Winter 2019 Exhibitions at MOCAD

This Friday night the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit will be unveiling its winter exhibitions to the public.

There will be four new exhibitions opening through April.

John FM will be DJing during the event and there will also be a performance of The TETRA.

The MOCAD is free, but there is a suggested donation of $5.

Hours: Friday, February 1 from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. Members can get into the museum at 6 p.m.

The MOCAD is located at 4454 Woodward Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48201

Shiver on the River

Hopefully the shivering will be kept to a minimum on Saturday for the Shiver on the River.

The annual event is put on by the Friends of the Detroit River and it highlights all of the great things that Belle Isle has to offer.

The main event is held in the Casino. There will be ecology exhibits and displays, refreshments, arts and crafts, and so much more. You can also check out the Belle Isle Aquarium, Belle Isle Conservatory, Belle Isle Nature Center, Coast Guard Station, and Dossin Museum.

I suggest checking out the Shiver on the River flyer to find out all of the events that are taking place on Saturday.

When: Saturday, February 3 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Belle Isle State Park

Moon’s Carnival of Mischief: The Beginning

If you’re in the mood to get weird this Saturday night, I’m going to send you to the Tangent Gallery /Hastings Street Ballroom for Moon’s Carnival of Mischief.

There will be live music, performances from Sophia Von Stardust, Mona Minx, and Ruby La Louche just to name a few. You’ll also run into an Oracle, juggler, tarot readers, clowns and a little bazaar for all of your shopping wants.

Overall, it sounds like a lot of fun. Costumes are not required, but encouraged.

Cover is $5 if you’re in costume and $10 if you’re not dressed up. This is an 18 and over event.

Hours: Saturday, February 2 from 7:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m

Tangent Gallery/ Hastings Street Ballroom is located at 715 East Milwaukee Street Detroit, Michigan 48202

A Doubleheader Of Babe Ruth Parties

The Great Bambino’s birthday is coming up on February 6. He would have been 124 years old this year.

I’m sure you don’t need an excuse to party this weekend, but if you are there are two parties to celebrate Babe’s birthday.

The first is Tom Derry’s 32th Annual Babe Ruth Party which will be held at Nemo’s Bar in Corktown.

There will be Babe Ruth memorabilia, hot dogs, and beer.

Hours:  Saturday, February 2 from 7 p.m.- 2 a.m.

Nemo’s is located at 1384 Michigan Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48226

The second party is the one that Tom’s Tavern use to throw, but now that Ron Gurdjian has passed away the Sports Locker in Livonia will be taking over hosting duties. The party was held there last year as well, when Tom’s was closed for repairs.

Yeah, I know it’s not in the city proper and the City 5 focuses on the city. But Ron was one hell of a guy, so I’m making an exception.

Hours: Saturday, February 2 from 6 p.m. – 1 a.m.

Sports Locker is located at 30375 Plymouth Road Livonia, Michigan 48150

Super Bowl at Second Best

If you’re looking for a place to watch the Big Game this Sunday, Second Best will be hosting a football celebration. The game starts at 6 p.m., but you can start your party at 4 p.m.

The game will be shown on an eight foot projector screen, as well as the flat screens that are around the bar.

Second Best will be serving up $5 pitchers all night along with bar snacks, nachos and wings. You’ll even have a chance to win a few giveaways.

Hours: Sunday, February 3 from  4 p.m. – 2 a.m.

Second Best is located at 42 Watson Detroit, Michigan 48201

Bonus

Danielle’s Sunday Brunch

It’s the first weekend of the month, so you know what’s up. Get over to the Two Way Inn on Sunday morning for some grub and Bloody Mary’s.

Hours: Sunday, February 3 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The Two Way Inn is located at 17897 Mt. Elliott Street Detroit, Michigan 48212
