Play episode

Welcome to the all new Oakland 5.

We love our weekly round up of all the fun things to do within the City of Detroit, but we also realize that sometimes people just want to hang out close to home.

Which brings us to our newest round up. We hope you like it. If you have any cool events going on around Oakland County don’t be afraid to shoot me a line at shi@dailydetroit.com.

Let’s do this.

Berkley Days

I really love Berkley. Especially their library and The Lunch Cafe on 12 Mile.

Anyway, Berkley is going to be hopping this weekend thanks to the annual Berkley Days festival.

Did you know that the first Berkley Days was in 1926? Because I didn’t.

This festival has everything.

A carnival midway with rides and games, a beer tent, a craft show, and all kinds of other family friendly fun.

If you want to ride the carnival rides, tickets are cash only. You can buy wristbands in advance online if you want to use a credit card.

The party starts on Thursday night and runs through Sunday.  You can find the schedule for all of the events here.

The Berkley Community Center is located at 2400 Robina Avenue Berkley, Michigan 48072

Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo

I’m a big fan of adopting a pet instead of buying one from a breeder. I have a soft spot for senior dogs.

There are so many pets that need loving forever homes that it just feels wrong to buy one from a breeder. Don’t even get me started on the puppy mills. That is horrible.

Anyway, this weekend is the annual Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo at the Detroit Zoo.

The Michigan Humane Society will be bringing plenty of adoptable dogs, cats, and rabbits to the zoo for the event.

You’ll find the adoption event in the parking lot by the water tower.

You can find out more information here.

Friday, May 17 from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 18 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Detroit Zoo is located at 8450 W. 10 Mile Road, Royal Oak, Michigan 48067

Clean the Ferndale Up

This Saturday is the 8th annual Clean the Ferndale Up event. So grab your gardening gloves, rakes, and sunscreen to go help out.

During the event volunteers will help clean up city parks, the Veteran’s Memorial, and downtown Ferndale.

Everyone who helps out will also get lunch.

Don’t forget to wear comfortable gardening clothes, and don’t forget to bring some water.

You can register to volunteer here.

Saturday, May 18 8:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Check in starts at 8:00 a.m.)

Ferndale City Hall 300 E 9 Mile Road Ferndale, Michigan 48220

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck

Attention all you Hello Kitty fans out there. The Hello Kitty Cafe Truck is coming back to metro Detroit this weekend.

The rolling cafe will be making a stop at Twelve Oaks Mall on Saturday.

Come on out to get your hands on Hello Kitty stuffed animals, petit fours, macarons, and more.

Saturday, May 18 from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Twelve Oaks Mall is located at 27500 Novi Road Novi, MI 48377

Beats & Brews & Brunch

I’m always looking for a good brunch, and Axle Brewing doesn’t disappoint.

For those who don’t know, Axle Brewing does a weekly Beats & Brews & Brunch every Sunday.

SNTNCK will be spinning all kinds of music throughout the day. So, go out grab some food and sit out in the awesome biergarten.

Sunday, May 19 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Axle Brewing is located at 567 Livernois Street Ferndale, Michigan 48220
