These last couple days have been intense; from the studio fire (listen to the Friday episode of the podcast for more)… to the big Roe v Wade decision and breaking some local news first on that… to trying to sort how to put the everything back together going forward. So I really needed a slice of normal in a year where I haven’t had much of it. Ran to @roccosdetroit and then headed to the beautiful Grand Circus Park to eat a big ol deli sandwich. Not pictured: The berry bar I picked up from Statler Market across the street after. I’d tell you some interesting fact about Grand Circus Park like at one point it was literally the swampy outskirts of the city or that the fountain you see was built to honor the 50th anniversary of the creation of the electric lightbulb. But honestly, this all has been a push. Editing on the road so we don’t miss a beat even though we’ve been recording conversations all week. Fridays are generally fun days on the podcast, and since due to work stuff Devon wasn’t available for the Friday show we talked to the historian of the Grand Hotel about the connections between it, Detroit, prohibition and traveling here by steamship and rail back in the day.
Was honored to be a guest today at an event for the historic studios of WGPR. It’s now a museum on East Jefferson. I plan on doing a podcast episode touching on what happened here, but it was America’s first African American owned and operated television station. It also was a home to firsts like the first all woman anchor pairing for a newscast and the pioneering use of cassette recorders for video instead of reels, allowing more mobility and quicker stories to air. They’ve got some big plans ahead, and there obviously more to this story than can fit in a FB post. But I can say I was moved by what they’re doing, the fact I was even invited and talked with so many great people. Those who stand today, stand in the shoes of giants and an amazing legacy of local content here in Detroit. It’s imperative to help keep the flame lit going forward.

There was a time in my life where me and my now super senior dog would often walk down from my flat to Astro on weekends and get iced coffee, an egg sandwich and an Anzac cookie. Astro (along with Ochre Bakery) are closing this weekend, so I had to get it one more time at their Corktown location. Nailed it, as always. Maybe one day I’ll figure out how to make that sandwich; and deal with my emotions about a chapter closed in my life; but I do know that I’m appreciative for the gift that was this place across from Michigan Central. It was a moment to finish the podcast in the studio that final iced pour over while recording today’s show with @dp_oreilly. On this April Fools’ day — meet the city of Detroit’s newly appointed Deputy Mayor, Mike Puggan. He’s been living at the mayor's residence, and if you show proof of Detroit residency, you may pet him. One thousand new residents have moved to the city in the couple of weeks since Puggan arrived, and next week Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer will present him with an award as an economic engine. In his off hours, he raises money for rescues. On today’s Daily Detroit podcast we got into the Friday fun spirit with this and a couple other stories… plus places to go around town.
