One of the biggest names in Detroit, not to mention the larger development and home loan business, is now in the internet business. Today, via Twitter, Dan Gilbert announced Rocket Fiber.

[Yesterday, we reported that Quicken Loans had a job posting that pointed toward building a fiber internet service](http://www.dailydetroit.com/2015/02/20/quicken-fiber-coming-to-detroit-job-posting-points-to-yes/ "Quicken Fiber Coming To Detroit? Job Posting Points To Yes"), as well as put together a few clues around what’s been happening.

Gilbert, via Twitter, says that in a few weeks that more details will be revealed and that it will be “Fast as Google or faster.” It will be very interesting to see the size and scope of such a project, and could be a huge leap forward for the city. However, to start, you’re going to need to be downtown to get it.

We have been able to confirm from sources ([and it’s additionally reported here](http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20150221/NEWS/150229974/dan-gilbert-confirms-plans-for-new-superfast-fiber-optic-internet?ref=dailydetroit.com)) that the network ([Facebook page here](https://www.facebook.com/rocketfiber)) will initially serve the core Central Business District square mile bounded by the Lodge, I-75, the river and I-375.

Then, they’re going up the Woodward corridor for residential and commercial service. Wi-fi would also be available.

Gilbert has invested more than $1.6 billion in the city, and companies controlled by Gilbert own 70 properties.
