# Jack White's Third Man Records store in Detroit opens Friday, will reissue TAMLA records

Detroit native Jack White’s much anticipated store that’s opening next door to the Shinola store on Canfield has a few tricks up its sleeve.

First, you need to know the date. Black Friday, Nov. 27\. Second, the address: 441 West Canfield in Detroit. 

Second, there will be live performances. It’s a record store opening, after all. You can expect, per Third Man Records:

Now, here’s the big part. Tamla records was part of and parcel of the Motown story. Before it was Motown, it was Tamla.

Why Tamla? Berry Gordy, Jr. originally wanted to name the label “Tammy” Records, after the hit song popularized by Debbie Reynolds from the 1957 film *Tammy and the Bachelor.* When he found the name was already in use, Berry decided on Tamla instead. The name Tamla Motown also popped up again in future years as a subsidiary.

But enough sidebar knowledge.

Records from the earliest days of the Motortown sound will be reissued and available on 7″ fresh black vinyl in reproduction sleeves, including:

- Marvin Gaye – “Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide” b/w “Never Let You Go”
- The Supremes – “Buttered Popcorn” b/w “Who’s Lovin You”
