# Mariner's Church To Hold Two Events This Weekend To Honor Great Lakes Sailors

This weekend is a big weekend over at the Mariner’s Church off of Jefferson in downtown Detroit.

They will be holding two events to honor the sailors of the Great Lakes.

The first event is a lecture about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald which took place 43 years ago on November 10.

The lecture is titled *Metamorphosis: How the Edmund Fitzgerald went from fact to Great Lakes legend.*

In all seriousness, singer and songwriter Gordon Lightfoot probably had a bit to do with turning the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald into a legend. For most people Lightfoot’s song *The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald* is the only thing they know about the cargo ship that perished in Lake Superior in 1975.

The lecture will take place on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m.

On Sunday the Mariner’s Church will hold its annual Great Lakes Memorial Service and Tolling of the Bells.

The ceremony will honor those sailors that have lost their lives in the Great Lakes as well as those who have lost their lives while serving in the military.

The Great Lakes Memorial Service and the Tolling of the Bells will take place on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
