Woodward south of I-75 to the riverfront is quickly becoming a luxury district.

[Crain’s Detroit first-reported before their Detroit Homecoming event](http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20160913/NEWS/160919920/shinola-gilbert-to-open-shinola-hotel-in-downtown-detroit?ref=dailydetroit.com) that real estate magnate Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock and Shinola have teamed up on to put a 130 room hotel at the corner of Woodward and Grand River.

There will be yet-to-be determined retail, a restaurant, and “living room space” in the 62,000 square foot building built in 1915\. The project also encompasses a smaller building next door built for Singer sewing in the 1930s.

A Shinola street clock will replace the clock on the corner now.

In the same genre as “The Belt,” a recently activated alleyway under and next to the Z Garage, they’re looking at activating the alley behind the hotel, which is steps from new hotspot Queen’s Bar as well as the soon to be renovated Metropolitan Building.

The most recent retail tenant of the building was a wig shop. Gilbert bought the building in 2014 for $2.7 million as part of his super skyscraper spree.

This project joins recent additions such as [Kit and Ace](http://www.dailydetroit.com/2016/06/23/video-first-look-new-kit-ace-woodward/), the [Aloft Hotel](http://www.dailydetroit.com/2014/12/16/look-david-whitney-building-kind-amazing/) in the renovated David Whitney Building, the Broderick Tower, as well as the under construction Warby Parker retail store.

More details are to be revealed at the Crain’s Homecoming event tomorrow, a private, invitation-only gathering of well-heeled expats and influencers to try to get more ex-pats to invest in their hometown. The hotel starts construction this November and plans are for it to be ready for the 2018 fall season.
