For many kids, the first day of school is an exciting time. They get to start a new grade, make new friends, and learn new subjects. However, for kids who lack proper school supplies, the first day of school can be painful.

Arriving to school without supplies affects children’s self-worth and self-image. It also makes it difficult for the children to learn and participate in class, lessening their chance of success.

However, this school year, the Mike Morse Law Firm, Michigan’s largest personal injury law firm, took a step to ensure that every child in Detroit Public Schools grades K-5 received the proper school supplies. The firm donated 23,000 backpacks full of school supplies to students in 65 elementary schools.

Mike Morse explained, “As the father of three girls, I know how important and exciting the first day of school can be. I want it to be that way for every kid. My firm’s and my goal is to increase a child’s chances by leveling the playing field right from the outset. We want to let them know that someone cares.”

Students with the proper school supplies have an increased ability to perform well. They also receive a confidence boost, which can carry over into their grades.

“There should be no excuse not to learn”, Morse said. “Students look forward to learning and become excited. Students are much less stressed and more ready to learn when they have the proper supplies and don’t have to worry about them. It makes the student feel successful. It tells them that people really care.”

The cost of the backpacks and supplies was quite significant, but Morse maintains that it was well worth it. “It makes our 100 plus employees feel good too. This city has been good to my firm, my people and me. We just want to give back.”
