While most people love finding a great deal first thing on Black Friday, I prefer to shop small. I love getting to know the store owners, and I love that they get to know me.

This Saturday is Small Business Saturday. It is a day that is dedicated to shopping at independently owned stores. They can be near or far, but the point is to really invest some time (and money) in small businesses.

Some of these small businesses will have special sales on Saturday as an incentive to spend your money in their stores.

This post is going to focus on shopping, but don’t forget to grab your morning coffee at a local coffee shop. May we suggest Fourteen East (in the same block as the first entrant on our list and a regular Daily Detroit haunt)? Or another one, Germack Coffee Roasting, located in Eastern Market near numbers 2 and 3?

Let’s get going. We have shopping to do.

Peacock Room – Detroit

If you have someone in your life that loves vintage fashion or really unique jewelry, I highly suggest you check out The Peacock Room in the Park Shelton.

I forgot how much I love that store. I just happened to be going to 14 East last night and popped into The Peacock Room. There are so many shiny things to look at.

If you have a holiday party to go to this season I highly suggest checking out this store. If you are a curvy girl, don’t fret because the owner, Rachel Lutz makes sure to order clothing for all body types.

While you’re in the Park Shelton don’t forget to check out the other great shops and restaurants. Also you can validate your parking in the structure.

This store doesn’t mess around when it comes to classic design or classic cocktails. If you have someone in your life that takes cocktails seriously then you need to check out some of the great items that are stocked in this store.

There is a whole host of great things happening at Pages Bookshop on Saturday. There will be mimosas in the morning (so get there early). Local authors will play guest booksellers, and for every purchase you’ll get set up on a blind date with a book.

There is an entire Small Business Saturday event happening in the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood. Here is the link to find out all of the great small business that are participating.

Modern Natural Baby – Ferndale

slack_for_ios_upload_1024

Modern Natural Baby is one of my favorite stores in Ferndale. I have spent a lot of money in this store since my son was born two years ago. This store is more than just cloth diapers, strollers, and car seats. (Even though you can get all these items at this store. They also have a car seat technician if you need help installing your car seat.)

If you have little kids in your life and the idea of going to Babies R Us or Toys R Us gives you the shivers I suggest checking out MNB. They have a great selection of toys, clothing, books, and warm winter clothing.

MNB just announced all of the Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sales. You can find the entire list here.

Don’t be intimidated by the name of the store. I know it seems like they would be stuffy and judgmental but everyone that works in that store is top notch.

One more thing, they carry Lifefactory stemless wineglasses. You’re welcome.

Hours: Monday through Saturday 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m.- 5 p.m. | Modern Natural Baby is located at 200 W. 9 Mile Suite B Ferndale Michigan, 48220

City Style – Berkley

If you are looking for any Made in Detroit items, or Detroit Scroll items you can find them at City Style as well.

The owner of City Style, Carrie Vestrand has a great eye for clothing, accessories and shoes. She is also super friendly. If you find something you really love, but don’t have all the cash on hand you can also do layaway.

Second Glance is a resale and consignment shop and they have three locations. Yes, I said resale. There is a great mixture of new and used items at each location. Earlier this year I found a brand-new, still in the box Little People Farm for $25.

They will have a great sale on Friday, November 25 and Saturday, November 26. You can find their St. Clair Shores, Grosse Pointe Woods or Eastpointe locations on their website.

Andy’s Tackle Box – Melvindale

andys-tackle-box

I grew up fishing with my dad, so I like to buy him new fishing gear every year. Of course you could go to a big box store and pick out some random fishing items. But if you are going in blind, it might be better to talk to some fishing experts.

Andy’s Tackle Box has been a mainstay in Melvindale since 1959, so they know what they are talking about. You can also pick up your fishing and hunting licenses there.

Hours: Monday through Friday 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. | Andy’s Tackle Box is located at 17485 Dix Road Melvindale, Michigan 48122
