Detroit has a ton of great bakeries, many with their own unique spin on the sugary treats.

For me, there is just something special about going into a bakery. Maybe it’s the smell of sugar, butter and baking bread. Or maybe it is knowing that I’m about to get some sort of delicious cookie or cake or loaf of bread. Frankly, if I could live on bread alone I would.

We wanted to compile a list of bakeries that are located in the city of Detroit, and be sure to highlight the places most people know as well as those you should take the time to go visit. Our three stipulations were that they had to have a brick and mortar location where you could buy the goods, they had to produce more than one thing (so no donut shops for this particular list), and they had to be good.

We hope you enjoy this list as much as we loved going around town and trying everything.

1. Chene Modern

While I was picking out my goodies another customer told me “look no further, this is the only bakery you need.” After trying a piece of caramel sheet cake, I have a feeling that man was right.

Chene Modern has been at it’s current location in Warrendale for 50 years, so it’s obvious that they are doing something right.

2. For the Love of Sugar

For the Love of Sugar might be the new kid on the block in terms of Detroit bakeries, but it makes the list. If you want your date to end on a sweet note, you stop here. I suggest the pistachio or creme brûlée macaron or the rainbow Fruity Pebble layer cake.

3. Victor Bakery

If you are on a quest for a good bakery in Highland Park, I suggest checking out Victor. It is tucked away on Victor street right off of Woodward. The cookies are the bomb here. There’s a pretty awesome Model T mural out back since it’s right near the old Ford plant, so check it out if you go to Victor.

4. On The Rise Bakery and Cafe

On The Rise is a special bakery. It is part of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. The Capuchin’s employ people who have been released from prison or a substance abuse program in order to get them back on their feet.

I love the sourdough at On The Rise. I personally pair it with Beau Bien Roasted Strawberry and Rhubarb Preserves.

Try the apple pie foldover thing. It’s insanely good.

6. Milano Bakery

Check out Milano Bakery when you’re in Eastern Market, though Saturdays can be pretty crazy so be prepared. This bakery also serves some pretty fantastic soups and sandwiches. I have liked everything I have gotten here.

 7. Good Cakes and Bakes

This bakery is located in the Avenue of Fashion and I absolutely love it. The salted caramel chocolate cupcake… is everything. If you’re looking for a place that uses organic ingredients check out Good Cakes and Bakes. They also offer some vegan goodies.

8. New Palace Bakery

Sure, paczki is probably what most people think of this Polish bakery, but they offer so much more. I really love the raspberry kolaczki.

9. Sister Pie

Outside of Sister Pie on their soft opening morning.

There has been so much already written about Sister Pie, but here’s what you need to know. Just go. But go early, because things sell quickly. I love the salted maple pie. They also had these amazing little rosemary shortbread cookies that blew my mind the last time I was there.

10. Avalon

The soon to be open Avalon cafe and bakery from Woodward Avenue. Daily Detroit photo.

It goes without saying that Avalon would make this list. We love Avalon and what they stand for. This is another bakery that pays a lot of attention to the ingredients and do not skimp on quality.

It’s hard to pick a favorite, but the sea salt chocolate cookie is always a solid choice.

Multiple locations – Midtown on Willis, Downtown soon to open at State and Griswold, and East Side Detroit on Bellevue.

11. New Martha Washington Bakery

We’re heading back to Hamtramck. I love this little bakery with the neon heart in the window. They might be best known for the giant line for Paczki Day, but they do offer other baked goods.

Once again, it’s all about cookies for me I really love the Chrusciki (Polish Angel Wings).

12. Sweet Potato Sensations

If you’re a fan of sweet potatoes, then you should head over to Sweet Potato Sensations. They have both savory and sweet items made with…you guessed it. Sweet Potato.

13. La Gloria

If you’re needing a churro or empanada fix then you need to head over to La Gloria in Mexicantown.

14. Mexicantown Bakery

Conchas at Mexicantown Bakery.

So good. Great to stop in for something to munch on while you sit in beautiful Clark Park. Above are Conchas.

15. Sheila’s Bakery

Sheila’s is located in the Springwells neighborhood and it does not disappoint. I suggest the Tres Leches cake. It’s amazing here.

16. Sisters Cakery

There is something endearing about an old school bakery, and this just fits the bill. We all really liked the cupcakes.

The best part about Astoria is that they are open late, so it’s the perfect place to go to after dinner. Ok that’s a lie. The best part about Astoria is the meringue, eclairs, and baklava.
