Few names elicit more happy memories involving sandwiches and love than Ernie’s.

The long-standing Oak Park establishment (a place we’ve highlighted before in a sandwich list and a deli list) is manned by Ernie Hassan, who seals every sandwich with a little bit of love.

Ernie’s will be featured on the Travel Channel’s show Food Paradise. According to his Facebook page, the show will air on April 30 at 8 p.m.

The show, aimed at food-focused travelers, focuses on the “must-stop” food spots around the United States that offer a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

If you’ve ever met Ernie Hassan, he definitely fits that “one-of-a-kind” criteria. You might get a Hersey’s kiss with your sandwich, and his signature “Yeah Baby!” can be heard outside the front door of the unassuming market on Capital Street.

The shop is more than 60 years old, and Ernie has been behind the counter for more than half a century. The gusto and obvious love for his customers that shows when he slings sandwiches is an inspiration to Detroiters near and far.

You don’t have to wait for the Travel Channel to get your hands on his signature sandwich, “The Monster.”

You can find him at 8500 Capital Street in Oak Park. Remember, cash only. But the sandwich will only run you from $5-$7 depending on how you want it.
