A Detroit icon is sticking around. Although the building leased by Bert’s Warehouse sold for $1.985 million in an online auction. However, Bert’s, a popular jazz bar and soul food restaurant that doubles as a concert venue, will remain where it is.
The building at 2727 Russell Street is currently owned by Simon Group Holdings – 2727 Russell LLC. It’s registered to Edwin Herbert in Birmingham. The company bought the building from Bert Dearing, owner of Bert’s Warehouse, when he lost it in a foreclosure in July 2014.
Unlike the building’s previous two owners, the pending new owner is not local.
Fans of Bert’s should be relieved that it’s not shutting down. Dearing has been at his Russell Street location for the past 28 years, and he plans to remain in the building until at least 2017, when his lease is up.
So go ahead and make a trip down to Bert’s Warehouse to indulge in great food, great music, and a Detroit favorite that’s here to stay.
“I’m gonna be here,” he told Crain’s Detroit Business. “Everything is in divine order.”
