Lately, restaurants have been opening so frequently in the city it’s getting hard to keep up with them all.
The one of the most recent examples is the pivot of the The Grille Midtown, to its new incarnation, The BLOCK Detroit, after just two years of operation under its former name.
From what I can tell, it was a smart move.
Located in the Midtown neighborhood steps from Great Lakes Coffee and Orchestra Hall, the newly revamped 80-seat eatery focuses on affordable food geared toward the students and young professionals living in Midtown.
The interior is slick but warm. It looks new but maintains a classic and inviting feel. The staff was very warm, courteous, and clearly prided themselves on ensuring we were enjoying our food and our dining experience.
According to our server, the house specialty were the wings – and that matched what we heard before coming there – and they did not disappoint.
The crispy, golden wings are fried to perfection, and we had them served with a choice of several sauces, ranging from a classic BBQ, to unique variations like the Bacon Bourbon or our favorite, the Rock N’ Rye BBQ.
Each of the sauces packed their own unique punch. The Rock n’ Rye had a thinner consistency, and was the perfect blend of sweet and savory to compliment the wings.
The Bourbon Bacon featured real chunks of bacon, giving it a sweet and salty taste with a slightly thicker consistency.
Finally, the traditional BBQ sauce was just what you want out of a staple sauce – it was thick and rich, with delicious smoky notes, giving it a bold flavor.
In addition to the wings, we treated ourselves to the decadent Alfredo Twice Baked Potato Skins.
These mammoth spuds of twice-baked goodness smothered in creamy Alfredo sauce and melted cheese, as ascetically pleasing as they were delicious.
The food top notch, and the prices were great considering the quality. We got the 15 wings for $20, which was a steal because the wings were massive and very filling.
Quick tip – hit their happy hour and snag any or all of the following: $3 wings, $7 beer and burger combo, $3 draft beers, or $5 you call it.
