They’re shutting down Monroe Street in Greektown in the evening all weekend because this party is going to be so big.

On Thursday, grab the family and head to Monroe Street between Beaubien and St. Antoine streets on Thursday, June 2 for a celebration like none other. Starting at 5 p.m. the area will become a walkable plaza for racing fans and visitors.

You’ll be able to enjoy a variety of activities, including strolling performers, live entertainment, and Belle Isle Grand Prix related interactive fun featuring elements of the Continental Tire Fan Zone, the Grand Prix IndyCar, a Trans Am Series race car, and appearances by some of the top race car drivers in the world.

“We are excited to celebrate the return of Greektown’s summer weekend event series and the return of racing to Detroit,” said Tasso Teftsis, president of the Greektown Preservation Society and co-owner of Astoria Pastry Shop, Redsmoke Barbeque and Krema. “We would like to thank Greektown Casino-Hotel for their continued support of Greektown at Sundown, helping us to bring increased visitors and revenue to Detroit and to Greektown.”

From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, racing fans will have the chance to meet and mingle with the following drivers competing in each of the four series of the Grand Prix:

  • Verizon IndyCar Series: Helio Castroneves, Juan Pablo Montoya, Simon Pagenaud, Will Power (all four Team Penske drivers), Sebastien Bourdais and Max Chilton
  • IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship: Tom Long and Tristan Nunez, Mazda Motorsports
  • Trans Am Series: Gar Robinson, Robinson Racing (2015 TA2 class champion)
  • SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks presented by TRAXXAS: Arie Luyendyk Jr., driver of the Quicken Loans Truck

“We look forward to starting not only the Grand Prix race weekend but also the Greektown summer weekend seriesnext Thursday at the Greektown at Sundown celebration,” said Bud Denker, Chairman of the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. “This event will get everyone revved up for summer and the Grand Prix with some great vehicles and racing displays and we want fans to come down and meet some of the world’s top drivers while enjoying all that Greektown has to offer.”

The party isn’t just on Thursday, though. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 3 through 5, Greektown at Sundown will continue every evening from 6 to 10 p.m.

Monroe Street will be closed to vehicle traffic, and visitors will be able to enjoy alfresco dining, live music, interactive art, and street performers.
