Happy Friday, Detroit. We’re back once again with your list of what’s good to do in and around the city this weekend with your City 5.
UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit Hydro Fest – Saturday and Sunday – Detroit River
If you enjoy a little sun, fun, and boats that look like spaceships careening across bodies of water at breakneck speeds, then I suggest you head over to the Detroit River for the UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit Hydro Fest on Saturday and Sunday.
This event was created to fill the void left by the popular APBA Gold Cup, which has moved to the Tri-Cities area in Washington this year, and is free save for the $20 parking fee. However, if you want to up the stakes a bit, you can grab grand stand seats for $45, or $185 for the VIP experience.

Ham+Jam – Saturday 12 p.m. – The Fowling Warehouse, Hamtramck
On Saturday, head down to Hamtramck for the Ham+Jam – a party that celebrates all of the wondrous weirdness that makes Detroit what it is. The daylong celebration honors the best art, music, and food in the City, and this year, the party goes down at the always-enjoyable Fowling Warehouse.
Admission is free and features food from Amicci’s Pizza, Detroit Style Pizza, Artur, and more! In addition to the stellar food there will be lots of local art, and live music from Detroit favorites like Characteristics, Soul Divide, Black Dog, and more!
The event runs from 12 p.m. till 1 a.m., but after 6 p.m. the kiddies will have to head home as this thing turns to an 18 and up fun fest.

Nigel and the Drop Out, Gosh Pith, and Ancient Language In Capitol Park – Saturday 8 p.m. – Capitol Park, Detroit
On Saturday, cruise down to Capitol Park to catch some of Detroit’s finest up and coming bands playing a free concert just outside of the Detroit Institute of Music Education.
Nigel and The Drop Out will headline with their stylish brand of electo-punk, and will be supported by indie-electro vibers Gosh Pith and Ancient Language.
The show starts at 8 p.m. and food and drinks will be available, so enjoy a summer evening in the park with these three great bands. For more information, check out the event page on Facebook.
A Detroit Flea – Sunday 12pm-8pm – The Jam Handy, Detroit
On Sunday, wind down your weekend by rifling through the formerly cherished knickknacks of Detroiters near and far at the Detroit Flea event at the Jam Handy on Grand Boulevard. This community flea market draws folks from all across Detroit’s 142 square mile radius for a day of music, homemade food, vintage goods, and good old fashioned Detroit weirdness.
If you have some goods of your own that you’re trying to offload, there is still some space available for vendors. There’s no fee to participate, but vendors are asked to prepare their favorite dish such cheesy potatoes, quiches, non-special brownies, or whatever else you may have up your sleeve, to be served up pot luck style.

House Music Boat Cruise 2015 – Sunday 7pm-1am – Detroit
If you’re looking for a more up-tempo end to your weekend, then consider the 2015 House Music Boat Cruise.
From 7-10pm you can dance away the Sunday scarries in style aboard the Diamond Queen ferry on the Detroit River. Entertainment will be split between the upper and lower deck, and will feature acts like Bruce Bailey, Alton Miller, Rick Wilhite, and more.
Tickets are $35, which includes a boarding pass, food, and complimentary admission to an after party at MIX in Bricktown. VIP packages are also available which get you express boarding privileges and preferred seating in addition to the goods included in your standard ticket.
