Welcome to the first weekend of May. Pretty soon our weekends will be filled with graduations and grad parties so let’s take advantage of  this weekend.

There are plenty of great events happening this weekend. We have a nice mixture of things to do.

Space Dive III – Detroit

Do you love Star Wars? Have you been looking for a way to celebrate the 4th of May with others who also love the World that George Lucas created 40 years ago? If you answered yes to all of those questions then you should go to Space Dive III.

Space Dive will take place May 4 through May 6. The Tangent Gallery/ Hastings Street Ballroom will turn into the Mos Eisley Cantina for this three day party.

There will be live music, performances by my favorite Detroit burlesque dancer Lushes LaMoan, and plenty of drinks.

Costumes are mandatory to get into the party. They can be as elaborate or simple as you want. You can find some ideas for costumes over on the Space Dive website.

Tickets are $20 a night or $30 for all three nights. Hours: 8:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

The Tangent Gallery/Hasting Street Ballroom is located at 715 E. Milwaukee Detroit, Michigan 48202

Comerica Shred Day – Detroit

Did you know that Detroit, Warren, and Dearborn ranked the third largest metropolitan area in the United States for identity theft?

That’s pretty scary huh? If you have been wondering what to do with that  giant stack of paper with sensitive information on it I have just the thing for you.

Comerica is hosting a Shred Day at Comerica Park this Saturday. Come out between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Iron Mountain will destroy and recycle all your paper. You can also bring unwanted electronics to the shred day and they will be disposed of safely. You can find a list of all the accepted items here.

Gleaners will also be at Comerica Park during the event collecting nonperishable food for those in need. The Comerica Shred Day will be set up in the parking lot of Comerica Park.

Comerica Park is located at 2100 Woodward Detroit, Michigan 48226

12th Annual Grandmont Rosedale Neighborhood Open House – Detroit

One of the things I love about writing for Daily Detroit is that it allows me to to all over the city. Over the years I have fallen in love with the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhoods in Northwest Detroit.

This Sunday the community is hosting the 12th Annual Grandmont Rosedale Neighborhood Open House. If you are in the market to purchase a new home in Detroit then you should go to this event.

The tour will take you throughout the five neighborhoods to show you the homes that are on the market. You will also get a chance to find out more about area businesses.

The event is free and open to the public. If you have questions you can email Cheryl V. Davis.

The tour is open from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. The tour starts at the North Rosedale Community House. That is located at 18445 Scarsdale Street Detroit, Michigan 48223

All Things Detroit – Detroit

This Sunday is a very special All Things Detroit because it is a pre-Mother’s Day edition. Head over to Eastern Market on Sunday, May 7 for this great market and food truck rally.

Flowers are great and all, but if your mom is like me she would probably love a new Faygo Candle from Motor City Creations.

You can find a list of vendors and purchase tickets on the All Things Detroit website. You can also download the All Things Detroit app on your phone. It’s pretty handy because it tells you where all your favorite vendors are.

General Admission is $5 per person and children under 12 get in free. There are also Beat the Crowd tickets for $15 per person (kids must have a ticket for the early admission.)  The Beat the Crowd ticket includes getting into the market at 9:30 a.m., complementary food and pop vouchers, and an All Things Detroit tote bag.

Hours: 9:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Eastern Market is located at 2934 Russell Street in Eastern Market Detroit, Michigan 48207

Cinco de Mayo Parade – Detroit

Friday is Cinco de Mayo and I would be remised if I didn’t include the Cinco de Mayo Parade that is taking place in Southwest Detroit on Sunday, May 7.

The Detroit Southwest Pride community group is hosting the parade.

The parade starts at 12:00 p.m. at Patton Recreation Center (Vernor at Woodmere) and will end at Clark Park (Vernor at Scotten).

Free Comic Book Day

Don’t forget that Saturday, May 6 is Free Comic Book Day.

The Detroit location of the Vault of Midnight is celebrating both Free Comic Book Day and it’s 1st anniversary of being open. So why not head down there to celebrate with them.

There are plenty of other great Comic Book Stores in metro Detroit that are participating in this event, so go get you a free comic book.
