Hey all. The good doctor fun is here to sub in for Shianne as she’s out the next couple of weeks, finding fun things for you to do this weekend around the city of Detroit.

Let’s dive in and enjoy Detroit this weekend.

Bike To Work Day

I get it, Detroiters. You’re either down with pedal power or you’re not. Me? I am. So I’ll be rolling in on Bike to Work Day this Friday and getting my weekend started off right.

Living in the city, I’m probably going to hitch up with the caravan in Highland Park, but I know that a lot of folks are coming in from the ‘burbs.

Per the event page, morning group rides converge Downtown at the Spirit of Detroit statue. There are also two pitstops in Midtown. All three locations are open from 7am to 10am:

• Spirit Plaza on Woodward at Jefferson. Free bike parking will be provided by Wheelhouse Detroit from 7am to 6pm. Mayor Mike Duggan will address the group between 8am and 8:30am.
• Midtown/WSU at Cass and Putnam hosted by Wayne State University
• New Center Park at Second and W. Grand Boulevard hosted by Henry Ford LiveWell

The event is put on by the Detroit Greenways Coalition, and a PDF of all the meetup locations to get your ride started is here.

Ride locations start:

  • Woodward Avenue Royal Oak, Ferndale
  • Gratiot Avenue Starting in Sterling Heights
  • Villages/Lafayette Park
  • Hamtramck
  • Plymouth
  • Dearborn/Michigan Avenue

Dequindre Cut Freight Yard Kick Off

Ok, this one is going to be cool. The Dequindre Cut has nine shipping containers that will function as an bazaar with shopping, food and spirits to lift your spirits.

A ton of Detroitey vendors will be there, and it’s in partnership with the BUILD Institute so you’ll be supporting folks getting off the ground. Don’t just visit in Detroit, but spend in Detroit.

There’s a big party Saturday starting at 11 a.m. but it’s open all weekend. Here’s the Facebook event.

A Day of Soccer And Fun With Detroit City FC

So Saturday is going to be a pretty big day when it comes to soccer (or Futbol?). You’ve have a couple different tracks you can take on your fun ride.

The big thing is that FC St. Pauli is in town. They have raucous supporters and are an international team, so you know it’s going to be party time. I’m going to break it down quick, but the in-depth details are here.

If you’re feeling like expanding your noggin, there’s a panel on the future of supporter-based soccer from 11am -1 pm at the Amnesia room at Motor City Hotel.

The pre-match meetup is at their official pre-match bar, The Fowling Warehouse. That runs from 2pm-5pm.

The match itself is at Keyworth Stadium from 6-8pm.

Then, if an afterparty is more your speed, it kicks off at The Majestic at 9pm. I would bring your maroon and gold drinking jacket.

Also – on our Daily podcast, we broke down the week ahead in DCFC on Monday. In case you have a minute, go listen to that.

Historic Detroit Canal Tour

So there are canals in Detroit. We took you through them a couple years ago, but there’s nothing like kayaking them for yourself. Sunday morning at 9 p.m., that can be a thing you do. Have rented from these folks before, they’ll treat you well. Information here.

My post-bar recommendation would be the divey Marshall’s Bar. Get yourself a shot and a High Life.

Flower Day

I feel like you should already know about this, but if you don’t, reminder – it’s Flower Day this weekend on Sunday. It’s a madhouse, but seriously, it’s Detroit in bloom and so worth it. Although crowds aren’t always my thing, there’s something about an awesome Detroit event that has unmatched fun energy. Eastern Market is a gem, and don’t forget to say hi to a mounted Detroit Police horses. It’s a fun thing for the kids (or kids at heart) to feed them apples if they’re into animals. 7am – 5pm. Facebook event here.

That’s all friends. Have an event share? Hit me up. Email dailydetroit -at- gmail dot com. See you around Detroit.
