The Detroit Mower Gang, one event at a time, have been a help to city parks. The group of volunteers mow the grass, pick up debris, and fix playground equipment in abandoned parks throughout Detroit. The Detroit Mower Gang was started in 2010 by Tom Nardone.

All of these good deeds were recognized by Craftsman Tools in May during the Motown Mowdown a 12 hour marathon. Craftsman released a short video about the work that the Detroit Mower Gang is doing throughout Detroit.

Craftsman also made a donation of equipment to the project.

“Kids don’t choose where they are born. Every time I saw an overgrown park I thought, there is something we can do here. These kids need our help,” Nardone said in the video.

The Detroit Mower Gang meets up every other Wednesday to mow abandoned parks. If you are interested in volunteering you can find out when and where they will be mowing on the group’s Facebook Page.
