Did you or someone you know serve our country, but now are looking for a job? The 2014 Detroit Veteran Expo and Job Fair at Cobo Center on Friday and Saturday may be the (free) ticket for you, whether you’ve recently left the service or your service was decades ago.

Hosted by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA), the Expo will include nearly 200 employers, agencies and universities. Also, benefit counselors will be there to answer questions about eligibility and assist with filing claims and on-site health screening.

If you didn’t know, the MVAA serves as the central coordinating point, connecting those who have served in the United States Armed Services and their families, to services and benefits throughout the state of Michigan.

“This free event promises something for everyone from education and employment opportunities to health care and disability assistance,” said MVAA Director Jeff Barnes.

Here’s how the schedule is set up, but read carefully because its actually set up more like two separate events, so you will want to go on the right day.

Friday is the expo portion, focused on benefits and resources. Attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for the new Michigan driver’s license veteran designation, get a copy of their DD-214, and or get a military retiree I.D. On November 7 that runs from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

On Saturday, November 8 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. is the Hiring Our Heroes job fair, with employers ready to hire. Previous events resulted in 31 on-site job offers. You are urged to dress for success, and bring your resume. There are also resume writing and interview skill workshops in the morning running from 9-10:30 a.m.

Also on Saturday an intellectual property attorney with expertise in digital marketing, early stage companies and crowdfunding named Michael Melfi will provide guidance to veterans with entrepreneurial ambitions during a presentation at 10:45 a.m.

Registration for the event this weekend is available online at www.MichiganVeterans.com/expo or at the event.
