I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m totally ready to say goodbye to 2016. I can’t think of a better way to do that than with a party.

Meridian is hosting The Drop, Motor City NYE this year in Campus Martius and Cadillac Square. This is the seventh year that Detroit has had a ball drop in Campus Martius.

“We’re expecting this year’s celebration to be bigger and better than ever,” said Jerrid Mooney, co-founder of Motor City NYE. “Because New Year’s Eve falls on a Saturday this year, it’s a great excuse to stay downtown and enjoy everything the city has to offer, including The Drop.”

The party starts at 4:00 p.m on Saturday and will go until 1:00 a.m. in Campus Martius and Cadillac Square. There will be two ball drops. This way the kids can celebrate the New Year in style without having to stay up until midnight.

The ball drop is a free public event, but there is a VIP party called the Motown Countdown for those who want to . There will be more information about the Motown Celebration later in this post.

There will be a free kid-zone between 4-7 p.m, with a ball drop for the kids at 6:30 p.m. The kid-zone will have family friendly performances by Cirque Among Us, the Detroit Youth Choir, John Davis, and a magician. There will also be bounce houses, face painting, and other entertainment for the kids. I have also heard that some Ghostbusters will be making an appearance.

There will be two stages for live music. Party goers will be able to watch live performances by Angela Davis Band, JUKEBOXX, Pato Motown Band, Motor City Groove, the Luther Keith Blues Band on the main stage.

The second stage will be located inside the VIP tent and will have live music by Weekend Comeback Band, The Tosha Owens Band,
DJ Zig Zag and DJ Ric Nasty.

If you get cold there will be wood fired warming stations throughout the parks. (I also hear you will be able to purchase s’more kits.)

For those who get hungry and thirsty there will be food and drinks available for purchase. Be sure to bring your identification with you if you want something stronger than pop.

If you are interested in getting tickets to the Motown Countdown tickets are currently $99 per person. There will be a reserved viewing area for party goers to watch the ball drop.

VIP tickets will get you 8 drink tickets to be used at the premium bar, champagne at midnight, party favors, midnight snack, and two balloon drops. Not to mention a heated bathroom trailer.

If you’re wondering about getting a hotel room for the night. Rooms are pretty limited, since Sunday is the Lions vs. Packers game. There are special discounts on the NYEDetroit website.

This year the event will help the Community Health and Social Services (CHASS), in southwest Detroit.
