The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) has issued is a boil water advisory is for the area defined by south of McNichols, East of Linwood and west of Conner. We’ve included a map above you can click to make larger.
The reason, according to the DWSD, is due to an equipment malfunction at Waterworks Park on Tuesday evening that caused water pressure to temporarily drop.
Because of that, bacterial contamination may have occurred in the water system. Corrective measures are currently being undertaken to correct the situation. Officials expect normal pressure to resume within 24 hours and the advisory to lift within 48.
DWSD says to not drink the water unless it has been boiled for at least one minute and let cool, or use bottled water. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.
Per the statement:
The Great Lakes Water Authority and DWSD are working to get pressure restored, and water staff will be taking other remedial actions such as flushing and collecting bacteriological samples from around the system. The samples will be collected to determine that the water quality meets the state drinking water standards. GLWA and DWSD will inform customers when tests show no bacteria and customers no longer need to boil water.
