Saturday, April 22 is Record Store Day. If you are into vinyl then you probably already know this. Instead of doing a regular old list of area record stores I thought I would change things up a bit.

This year I wanted to know what people’s ultimate Detroit album is. The quintessential album that speaks to them on a personal level. The musical legacy that Detroit has means that there are so many avenues one person could take.

So I drove to a few record stores around the area to ask.

This question caught a few people off guard, while others knew right away. Choosing an album on the spot can be tough, because music can be so subjective. But I think we have a pretty nice list to start out with. What are you thoughts?

1. People’s Music – Detroit

As quickly as the words left my mouth, Brad had his top choice in his hand. Yusuf Lateef’s Detroit Latitude 42° 30° Longitude 83°

Two locations: 1464 Gratiot Avenue in Detroit and 20140 Livernois Avenue in Detroit.

2. Street Corner Music – Oak Park

When I spoke to one of the employees at Street Corner Music he told me his top choice was Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On.

Find Street Corner Music at 26020 Greenfield Road in Oak Park.

3. Found Sound – Ferndale

During my visit I had a nice chat with three of the Found Sound employees. The Stooges Fun House is a “deserted island album.”

Find Found Sound at 234 West 9 Mile Road in Ferndale.

4. Hello Records – Detroit

Hello Records Detroit

Wade’s top pick for album is Lyman Woodard Organization’s Saturday Night Special.

“The album didn’t get the dues that it should have when it was released. It’s an underdog much like Detroit.”

Take a spin on over to Hello Records at 1459 Bagley in Detroit.

5. UHF Records – Royal Oak

When I talked to Scott at UHF he had some thinking to do. He ended up with two. Alice Cooper’s Killer and Iggy & The Stooges Raw Power.

Tune into UHF Records at 512 S Washington Avenue in Royal Oak.

6. Stormy Records – Dearborn

Stormy Records

Put another mark down for Yusuf Lateef’s Detroit Latitude 42° 30° Longitude 83°.  Stormy Record’s owners Windy and Carl both picked Detroit for their number one album.

You can navigate to Stormy Records at 13306 Michigan Avenue in Dearborn.
