The Detroit development scene isn’t immune from the national trends of renaming areas of cities with abbreviations.

Meet the “SOMA District” standing for “South Of Mack Avenue” released in a new video teaser from Friedman Real Estate we’ve embedded above.

With a name like “SOMA,” one can’t help but think of this snippet from South Park:

Let’s get into the details.

  • In total, it encompasses more than seven acres.
  • As part of the project, there are two existing office buildings. One is 90,000 square feet, and the other 55,000. One of the buildings is currently home to the Michigan headquarters of the Red Cross.
  • Two parking decks will break ground in the fall of 2017 that will be between 500-600 spaces each.
  • The plan is to add two new office towers along Woodward..

As we shared earlier, there has been demolition on Woodward and this is also the rumored Target site.

According to the city’s neighborhood location map, SOMA is on the edge of the Brush Park neighborhood. The’s a QLINE stop right on the corner of Mack and Woodward as well.
