» Frustrated by recent power outages? Locally, there’s a town hall by the Michigan Public Service Commission to make your voice heard in Dearborn on Monday, March 20 from 5:30p to 8p at Fordson High School. There’s also a hearing in Jackson (guessing you’re not driving to that one) and a virtual hearing the next day, too. [MLive]
» Detroit City Council passed Council President Mary Sheffield’s resolution declaring March 13 as “313 Day” in the City of Detroit, per a press release. There will be events all weekend. The main event is the concert on Monday, March 13 at The Fillmore, featuring the likes of Kash Doll and Icewear Vezzo.

» The St. Patrick’s Parade is back this Sunday. In their 65th year, the event has undergone some changes including the addition of a family fun zone. To tell us all about it, I talked with Mike Kelly, the parade co-chair and president of the United Irish Societies. [St. Patrick’s Parade website]
» Eastpointe Mayor Monique Owens has been charged in a COVID relief fund fraud case. Arraigned Thursday, Macomb County’s first black mayor has been a lightning rod among residents, as she said residents could “blame themselves” for high crime in the suburb. » High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes are coming to I-75 from 12 Mile to South Boulevard. As Metro Detroit’s population has spread into Oakland County, that spot of freeway is now among the most used. Carpool lots are also under construction. [ClickOnDetroit]
For me it’s a little reminder that the vast majority of people in Metro Detroit are in the suburbs. Doing some quick back-of-the-napkin math, only about 15% of the region’s population lives in the city of Detroit now.
» Megabus expands Detroit routes to five Canadian cities. For just under $50, you can buy a one way ticket from Detroit to Toronto. [Detroit News]
» Redford Township is getting a $19.5M recreation and wellness center. The 30,000 sq. ft. facility will include an indoor walking track, therapeutic swimming pool, and a fieldhouse with basketball and pickleball courts. [Hometown Life]

» The biggest failure of a legal U.S. cannabis business might be right here in Michigan. Skymint is in receivership, reportedly burning through $3 million a day. [Crain’s Detroit Business]
It’s pretty simple. Everyone jumped in the pot pool, now we grow three times more marijuana than we consume, and the party is going to get a lot quieter with consolidation and losses. It’s going to take immense brand power and savvy to succeed in cannabis in Michigan over the next few years. We discuss on the Thursday edition of the podcast.

Co-owner and chef of Baobab Fare Hamissi Mamba donated half of the $10,000 grand prize from winning an episode of Food Network’s Chopped to the non-profit for asylum seekers.
