The Scarab Club has been a big part of the art and music scene in Detroit for the past 110 years.
One of the ways they have fostered the art scene is by offering new opportunities for Detroit based up and coming artists to share their talents.
This spring the Scarab Club and Planet D Nonet launched Live at the Scarab Club which showcases this talent to the community. The program is part of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge.
Live at the Scarab Club will have performances on Sunday, October 1 and Sunday, November 18.
The first performance will be a tribute to the work of Thelonious Monk. The legendary jazz musician would have turned 100 years old on October 10.
John Sinclair will also be reading corresponding prose and poems throughout the performance.
The performance on Sunday, October 1 will begin at 3:00 p.m.
The second performance will showcase the music of Louis Jordan. Jordan was a pioneer in the music world. He is known as “the King of the Jukebox.”
Planet D Nonet’s RJ Spangler and several new musicians will be performing some of Jordan’s music.
The performance on Saturday, November 18 will begin at 2:00 p.m.
Tickets to both performances are $25 at the door for adults, $20 for seniors and students, $15 for Scarab Club Members. You can also purchase tickets online.
