We’re one week closer to the big Halloween weekend and the theme parties are rolling in at a rapid pace, so let’s cut to the chase this week.

Riopelle Opening – Friday – Detroit
On Friday night enjoy the work of renowned painter, Ellen Nelson, and print maker, Sarah Brennan, who will showcase their dynamic collections at Riopelle, a studio collective in Eastern Market.
Nelson, a University of M grad hailing from Kalamazoo, is a founding member of the Alliance of Kalamazoo Artists. Her paintings take a sociological view of American culture, and have been on display in galleries, restaurants, and stores throughout Kalamazoo, as well as a Western Michigan University.
Brennan, a Missouri native and graduate from the University of Michigan as well, will show work which focuses on drawing and printmaking. This opening will lead into her upcoming 9 month residency with Spread Art Detroit.

United Sound Historical Marker Fundraiser – Friday – Detroit
Detroit is full of beautiful recording studios both new and old.
On Friday, one of the most iconic studios in the city, United Sound Systems Studios, will host a fundraising event and party as they seek to secure their status as a designated historical structure from the Detroit Historic Commission.
Established in 1933 by Jimmy Siracuse, it became the first independent and full service major recording studio in the nation, creating a platform which gave artists, musicians, writers, and producers the ability to record music, cut the record and get airplay without being signed to a major label.
George Clinton, Marvin Gaye, The Rolling Stones, and Aretha Franklin, are just a few of legends who have recorded there.
Admission to the event is a $20 suggested donation, which will include food from Mimi’s Bistro, beer from Motor City Brewing Works, music curated by Pirahnahead (bass player for George Clinton), and a rare chance for a private tour of the building.

Creepy Cheapy VIII: Secret of the Ooze – Friday – Pontiac
Everyone’s favorite Halloween cover show returns to the Crofoot this Friday and it looks to be bigger and wilder than ever.
If you’re not familiar with the Creepy Cheapy, what you get is a night full of local bands taking on the persona of their favorite artists, and performing a set of cover songs while in character.
This year will feature covers of The Foo Fighters, Nicki Minaj, Black Sabbath, and many more!
Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door, so don’t miss out on this highly affordable and fun filled event.

Detroit Derby Girls Season 11 Opener – Saturday – Masonic Temple
The Detroit Derby Girls return to the Masonic Temple on Saturday for the start of their 11th season.
If you’ve never seen the Derby Girls in action, don’t miss this event!
Paying homage to the popular derby teams of the 1970’s, The Detroit Derby Girls are Michigan’s premier roller derby league, and are the oldest, largest, and highest ranked roller derby league in Michigan!
Doors to the event are at 5:00 p.m., and the races are at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
Advance tickets are available for $15 or at the door for $18. Families are welcome at the event, and you can bring up to two children age 12 and under for free with each adult admission.

Spooktacular – Sunday – Royal Oak
On Sunday bring the family to downtown Royal Oak for their annual Spooktacular event from 2-4 p.m.
Parents can bring their children in costume to the fun and festive downtown area where over 60 businesses will pass out candy and other goodies to your tick or treaters.
Some business will even offer special deals for participating groups, like 99 cent soft serve cones at Baskin Robins, or signature s’more pie dessert samples at Blaze Pizza.
The event is free to attend and is fun for the whole family, so get an extra round of trick or treating in for your little ones and enjoy the praise for the next few months.

After your spooktacular experience in Royal Oak on Sunday, take your family to beautiful Palmer Park for their very spooky Halloween story time event.
You’ll enjoy the autumn park scenery and interactive stories read aloud and performed around the theme of Spooky Stories.
