Hello, hello, hello!

I hope you all had a great week so far.

Things have been pretty busy over here at the Daily Detroit World Headquarters this week. But overall I say it’s been a good one.

Looking ahead to the weekend. There are a lot of great events happening. I for one am really looking forward to Independent Bookstore Day. Maybe I’ll run into you at Pages Bookshop.

7th Annual Venus Rising: All Women’s Art Exhibition

This Friday and Saturday night the Tangent Gallery and Hasting Street Ballroom will be the venue of a really cool all women’s art exhibition.

Obviously I think this a cool event, not just because I’m a female. But also, I know some pretty talented women who call Detroit and I love that this event is giving some of them a chance to shine.

The other cool thing is that this event not only highlights the visual medium, but also performance art.

There will be live music and dance performances throughout the night. Bring some cash, because the art is for sale. There will also be plenty of women vendors selling their wares.

Friday night is the Preview Gala, so tickets are a bit more pricey at $25 per person…but you get a discount on artwork, strolling appetizers and cocktails.

Saturday night tickets are $15 per person. Tickets can be purchased here. This is an 18 and over event.

Friday, April 26 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 27 from 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

Tangent Gallery and Hasting Street Ballroom are located at 715 East Milwaukee Detroit, Michigan 48202

Independent Bookstore Day

You know what RuPaul always says?

“Reading is fundamental.”

Sure, he might be talking about the art of throwing shade at someone. But there is truth to that, reading IS fundamental.

So, this Saturday is a little something called Independent Bookstore Day. It’s a national celebration for independent bookstores around the country.

We’ve got some pretty great indie bookstores around metro Detroit, so why not hit one of them up to get a new book.

Pages Book Shop and Source Booksellers are both doing something for Independent Bookstore Day. There will be special programing throughout the day.

I hear Pages will have mimosas and blind dates with a book. I’m here for it.

If you’re up for a drive I would hit up  Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor. The store was just named the Best Bookstore of the Year from Publisher’s Weekly.

Saturday, April 27 all day

Multiple locations around the region. Just go spend some money in an independent bookstore.

Mainstreet Mob at Good Cakes and Bakes

I’m a big fan of Good Cakes and Bakes over in the Avenue of Fashion. I love the salted caramel cupcakes.

Anyway, this Saturday Mainstreet Mob will be heading to Good Cakes and Bakes for a little cash mob action.

This is a great excuse to check out Good Cakes and Bakes if you haven’t already done so.

Plus, you might win a gift card from Good Cakes and Bakes.

You can find out more details here.

Saturday, April 27 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Good Cakes and Bakes is located at 19363 Livernois Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48221

Michigan Plant Swap

Did you see my post about the Michigan Plant Swap earlier this week?

No?

Well, I’ve already written about the event which will take place on Sunday, April 28 in the Arcade of the Fisher Building.

Here’s that link with all of the details.

Sunday, April 28 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The Fisher Building is located at 3011 West Grand Boulevard Detroit, Michigan 48202

DEATH / Timmy Organism at Deluxx Fluxx

There is something special about the band DEATH.

Don’t let the name scare you away. The band is a trio of brothers that was formed in the early 70’s over on the eastside of Detroit.

The band was punk rock before punk was even a thing.

Maybe you’ve watched Detroiters or listen to the newest season of the podcast Crimetown and heard the song “Politician in my Eyes”.

That song is by DEATH. That bass line is everything. If you like the MC5 then you will probably like this band.

Anyway, there is a reason I’m writing about this band.

They are playing a live show this Sunday night at Deluxx Fluxx inside The Belt.

I’m telling you, this will be a great show to see. So if you can make it out on a school night I say do it.

Tickets are $20 or $25 at the door. You can buy them here. This is an 18 and over show.

Sunday, April 28 from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

Deluxx Fluxx is located 1274 Library Street Detroit, MI 48226

P.S. If you can’t make it out to see DEATH live on Sunday night, there will be a screening of the documentary about the band Sunday afternoon. You can find all of the information here.
