Welcome to the final weekend of February. Where has this month gone? Seriously.

This weekend is going to be pretty busy around town. I know I’m looking forward to trying to make it to a few of these events.

Have fun weekend everyone!

Pretty Things Peep Show at the Planet Ant

Sure, some people say that Vaudeville is dead, but in fact there are some great troupes out there that travel the country showcasing their talents.

This Friday night you have a chance to check out The Pretty Things Peep Show at the Ant Hall in Hamtramck.

The show is part circus sideshow and vaudeville acts, and it sounds like it’s my kind of thing. You’ll see acts from Go-Go Amy, The Unkillable Jenny Lynne, Rasputin’s Marionettes, Scraps the Mind Reading Dog, and Rachel Atlas.

This is an 18 and over show…because there will be some burlesque action going on.

Tickets are $20 a person and you can buy tickets here.

When: Friday, February 22 doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:00 p.m.

The Ant Hall is located at 2320 Caniff Avenue Hamtramck, Michigan 48212

Empty Bowls Detroit Painting Workshop

If you’re feeling crafty I have just the event for you. On Friday night there will be a bowl painting workshop at Cass Community Services.

The organization is getting prepped for the upcoming Empty Bowls Detroit fundraiser in March.

The $10 donation per bowl covers the cost of supplies. I’m sure you could paint a few bowls during the two hour event. They will take care of the final layer of glaze and firing the finished bowls.

You’ll have a chance to buy a bowl at the Empty Bowls event on Friday, March 8. Put that date in your calendar, because the Daily Detroit team will be at the event serving up some hot soup.

Feel free to bring the kids along to paint a bowl.

You can sign up for the event here.

When: Friday, February 22 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Cass Community Services is located at 3745 Cass Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48201

The Green Book Screening and Discussion

Cinema Detroit will be screening the Oscar nominated movie The Green Book on Saturday night.

There will also be a discussion with Tawana Petty of Petty Propolis.

If you’ve been wanting to check out this movie before the Oscars, now is your chance…because the Oscars are on Sunday.

Tickets for the movie are $8 per person. You can pick up your tickets here.

When: Saturday, February 23 at 4:30 p.m.

Cinema Detroit is located at 4126 3rd Street Detroit, Michigan 48201

West Side Story at the Senate

I will always remember the first time I saw West Side Story…my music teacher showed it to us in 5th grade.

I’m not sure what it was about the Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim musical that made me fall in love with it, but from that day on I loved West Side Story.

I think I asked my aunt for both the VHS of the movie and the cassette tape of the soundtrack for my 12th birthday. Yep…I’m that old.

To this day it is still in my top five musicals…and I love me some musical theatre.

Anyway, there is a reason for my stroll down memory lane.

The Senate Theater will be showing West Side Story on Saturday night. If you have never seen West Side Story what are you waiting for? The music is phenomenal and Rita Moreno is amazing as Anita.

Tickets for the show are only $5 which is a steal of a deal. You can purchase them here.

When: Saturday, February 23 doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the movie starts at 8:00 p.m.

The Senate is located at 6424 Michigan Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48210
