Assumption Grotto has always had a special place in my heart as it’s where some of my closest family is laid to rest, as well as in a neighborhood some of my east side family lived in.

The Assumption Grotto houses the shrine of Our Lady of the Lourdes. The parish was founded in 1832 and is the second oldest in the city.

So when I stumbled upon this video by the Detroit Mass Mob featuring Joe Fisher, the volunteer groundskeeper, it’s a must-share.

I won’t add much in writing here as the video is the star, but it’s chock-full of stories of history, has maps, and all the things you’d want out of a history video. You’ll also see the graves of many people whose names you can find today on our streets.

Assumption Grotto is located at 13770 Gratiot Avenue in Detroit, Michigan.
