Memorial Day is upon us, and if you’re not heading up north what is there to do? Let’s dive right in.

As a reminder, this is our new column for events along the Woodward corridor from Ferndale north; if you’re looking for events in the city of Detroit, hit up our City 5.

Gristmill Porter Release

Up in downtown Pontiac, Fillmore 13 Brewery is having a release event for a collaboration with Windmill Pointe Brewing Company. It’s on Saturday from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. Gristmill Porter is an American Style Porter that runs 6.5% ABV – 40 IBU (beer nerds will understand) which according to the brewers has “a noteworthy roasted chocolate profile accompanied by a slight hop bitterness to finish.”  More here.

Over at the Como’s in Ferndale they’re having a poetry slam. Sure, tickets are $10 to get in ($12 at the door) on Saturday night – but the cool thing is the audience votes on the winner and there are prizes for the authors. The cash prize is $200 for the 1st Place winner, as well as advancing in whatever competition they’re having going on. There are a couple DJs as well. Event runs from 7 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. More info here.

Isaac Ryder w/ Fareed Haque at Otus Supply

If you’re feeling like soul jazz instead of the beats of Movement, Otus Supply in Ferndale might be the spot for you. Otus Supply is one of Ferndale’s newer spots and it’s quickly gaining a lot of local love. Saturday night from 10 p.m. – 1 a.m., Isaac Ryder (formerly known as Joel Rydecki Band) hits the state along with internationally respected funk jazz world guitarist Fareed Haque.

Jesus Christ Superstar

Stagecrafters in Royal Oak are in the middle of their run of the iconic musical Jesus Christ Superstar (through June 11). A great affordable way to check out a show. Specifically, we’re calling out the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. to give you extra room for fun on your Sunday night, but there are variety of showings. The emotional and energetic score includes legendary songs such as “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Everything’s Alright” and, of course, “Superstar.” Tickets here.
