Brooklyn Based Brand To Build A Boutique Hotel In Midtown

Show notes

Detroit is in line to get one of the first five of the new West Elm boutique hotels, to be built on a corner parking lot at Cass and Canfield.

The location is in the bustling heart of the Midtown neighborhood, right next to a Wayne State residency hall. Shinola, Third Man Records, Hugh, Traffic Jam & Snug and other retail and restaurants are all within a block.

If the concept of a boutique hotel sounds familiar, it should be – Shinola announced last week that they’re opening one in downtown Detroit.

West Elm’s Detroit property in partnership with hospitality management and development company DDK will be more than 120 rooms. Each hotel will feature “local design elements” that celebrate community and reflect traditional décor, handicraft, cuisine and culture from the region.

Artwork will be commissioned and curated locally for each guest room as well as for the communal, common areas in each hotel. If you didn’t know, Brooklyn-based West Elm is one of the branches of Williams-Sonoma.

“There is a growing desire among modern travelers to immerse themselves in the place they are visiting. They want a boutique experience, and expect great, reliable service that caters to their needs,” said David Bowd, co-founder of DDK in a statement. “Our general managers will serve as innkeepers, and West Elm HOTELS will focus on making real community connections for visitors and residents alike.”

Other locations are planned for Minneapolis, Minnesota; Savannah, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Detroit hotel aims to open in 2018.
