Detroit's Palmer Park To Get New Tennis Courts

Show notes
Detroit’s Palmer Park is getting some badly needed new tennis courts.
Crews recently demolished the old courts, which sit along Woodward Avenue between McNichols and Seven Mile Roads and have hosted a popular youth Tennis Academy for the past five years.
The group People For Palmer Park tells Daily Detroit the plan is to reconstruct the courts with new fencing, benches, nets and windscreens. There will be nine courts in total and six junior courts, which are about half as long as full-size courts and are for kids age 8 and under. In addition, one bank of courts will also have markings for Pickleball players.
Palmer Park tennis coordinator Lee King says the project is long overdue and that the courts have been in bad shape for nearly 30 years. Court users have been maintaining them on their own for years, but some of the courts have long since been rendered unplayable.
The new courts are expected to be completed by the end of May 2019. The city of Detroit’s work is being funded in part by a grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation
