Show notes

Here’s some positive economic news for the Detroit region.

The Detroit metro area saw a 2% drop in the unemployment rate from this time last year. That’s the largest drop in any metro area in the United States larger than one million people, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In June of 2016, the rate for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn statistical area that covers the region was 5.7% and in June of 2017, it was 3.7%.

“Forty-three large areas had over-the-year unemployment rate decreases and eight had increases,” said the BLS. “The largest rate decrease occurred in Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, Mich. (-2.0 percentage points).”

The city of Detroit also recently reported large drops in their unemployment rate.

Metro Detroit’s unemployment rate is now lower than that of Los Angeles/Long Beach/Anaheim (4.3%), New York/Newark/Jersey City (4.3%) and Boston/Cambridge/Nashua (4.0%).
