New preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics provided by the city of Detroit shows that Detroit’s unemployment rate continues to decline.
The data shows that the city’s jobless rate is 7.5 percent for the month of May 2017, the most recent available. The unemployment rate is down nearly a full point from April’s rate of 8.4 percent.
In April and May alone, there are 2,400 more Detroit residents employed.
That rate is the lowest the city has seen in 17 years.
According to BLS statistics, when Mayor Mike Duggan took office in January 2014, the city’s unemployment rate was 17.6 percent.
Nationally, the unemployment rate is 4.3 percent.
