Coriander Kitchen and Farm, one of the east side’s most vibrant, unique dining experiences, has opened a new bar within its canal-side restaurant.
Canal Bar is a first come, first serve spot next to Coriander’s main dining area (look for the blue and white striped umbrellas!) with its own separate cocktail and snack menu.
Guests can wait for their table, hang out while Coriander is closed between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., or skip the main dining experience altogether for a more informal hang on the water.
Cocktails and snacks are served out of trailers tucked right in the space.
Drink choices are easy and recognizable – wine is listed as simply Patio Red, Patio White, and Patio Pink, beer choices include Oberon and Stroh’s.
Cocktails are light, mildly carbonated, and chock full of ingredients from Coriander’s farm.
Two of the most eye-catching are the Canal Marg, with mint-infused rum, beets and lime, and the Canal Negroni, made with Hawthorne gin, Long Road red amaro, and orange-infused sweet vermouth. Both are full of bright flavors and soft edges, the kind that encourage an afternoon lounging in the sun.
Snack items include a green garlic dip with pickled chilis and rosemary oil, and smothered tortilla chips with poblano-salsa verde, black beans, and warm queso.
It’s a casual take on an already casual space. Coriander offers guests the opportunity to dine on seaside fare while looking out on Detroit’s canals.
Overflowing with knick knacks, flowers from their farm, and people kicking back, their website describes the atmosphere as “drunk grandma.”
Canal Bar patrons also enjoy a front row seat to an array of animals passing through the canal on the way to the Detroit River. Beavers, herons, muskrats, even a pair of bald eagles who use the canal as a highway, are frequently sighted, Coriander director of operations and co-owner Amy Haimerl said.
Humans, of course, pass by too. On boats, kayaks, and jet skis. You can even dock right at the bar.
Canal Bar opens at 1 p.m. on weekends and 3 p.m. weekdays, and closes around 8 p.m. on Sundays and 9 p.m. the rest of the week. It’s closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, along with the rest of Coriander.
