The greater downtown Detroit area might be getting a movie theatre megaplex soon.
That’s what Crain’s Detroit Business is reporting, based on a conversation with Emagine Chairman Paul Glantz.
“If you look at all the housing units that are being developed downtown and in Midtown, I think you’re going to see an enormous amount of housing come online in next couple years,” Glantz told Crain’s.
The investment would be in the neighborhood of $15 million, and closer to residential.
Downtown Detroit until 2015 had a four screen movie theatre in the Renaissance Center. At the time, a spokeswoman said the theatre was too small and too old to be updated after a nearly 40 year run.
The city of Detroit currently has one first-run movie theatre, and that’s the Bel-Air on 8 Mile. Independent and classic films are also regularly shown in the city at at Cinema Detroit, the Detroit Film Theatre, and the Redford Theatre.
