United Way, one of the leading nonprofits in Metro Detroit, works to improve the lives of residents in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. The organization aims to increase people’s economic self-reliance, strengthen families, and promote health and wellness.

At the end of September, United Way will continue its mission under new leadership. Dr. Herman B. Gray has been named President and CEO of United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWSEM). Dr. Gray will replace Michael J. Brennan, who is stepping down from his position after 30 years of service, the last 12 spent as CEO and President of UWSEM.

Dr. Gray currently serves as Executive Vice President for Pediatric Health Services at the Detroit Medical Center. He is a physician and child and family advocate and has held numerous positions during his career.

He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor in 1976, and in 2003 Dr. Gray earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

“We felt Dr. Gray’s understanding of the community, his passion for helping children and families, and his proven business acumen made him the ideal leader as we evolve into the next chapter of United Way’s role of creating positive community change in the areas of Education, Financial Security and Basic Needs,” said Beth Ardisana, board chairperson of UWSEM.

Dr. Gray is an active board member, serving with several national and state organizations, including the Children’s Hospital Association Board of Directors, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, and the U.S. Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission.

During his prestigious career, Dr. Gray has received numerous honors, including the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion in 2011.

Dr. Gray is looking forward to being part of UWSEM and helping the organization further its mission.

“I’ve witnessed first-hand the significant influence United Way has had in the southeastern Michigan region and the value it brings in convening the various private, non-profit and government agencies to rally around a cause, and I’m excited to lead this organization as it moves forward in strengthening our community,” said Gray.
