What to do if you don’t want to spend hours looking at cars in a convention center this weekend, or you’re looking for more? Everyone knows about the North American International Auto Show that opens to the public on Saturday, but what about other events around town? Let’s dive in.

The Interviewees – Ferndale

It’s been a while since I’ve highlighted an improv show over at Go Comedy. If you’re looking for something to do on Friday night I highly suggest checking out The Interviewees.

The show is an off the cuff interview show with five “guest characters”. During the interview you will also see scenes being played out by the cast.

Tickets are $15 per person. I highly suggest grabbing your tickets in advance, because they do tend to sell out on the weekend. (Also consider snagging some tickets to the All Star Showdown that happens right after the Interviewees.)

Hours: 8 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Go Comedy is located at 261 E. 9 Mile Ferndale, Michigan 48220

Winter Film Series: The Hudson’s Building – Detroit

The Detroit Historical Society is showcasing the Hudson’s Building this weekend. For those of you who grew up going to Hudson’s downtown this is a great opportunity to show the younger generation the history of this magnificent building.

This documentary was made in 1997 and documents the history of the Hudson’s Building and the debate of what should happen to the building. (We obviously know what happened. It still stings all these years later.)

The film starts at 3 p.m. and goes until 4 p.m. You’ll have plenty of time to take a spin around the museum either before or after the movie.

The movie and admission to the Detroit Historical Society is free, however they always accept donations. You will also have to pay for parking, so bring some extra cash.

The Detroit Historical Society is located at 5401 Woodward, Detroit, Michigan 48202

Metropolis at the Senate – Detroit

I don’t think I’ve ever listed an event for the Senate Theater, so this is a first.

While the Senate is mostly known for the Theater Organ Society performances, they will be showing Metropolis.

Metropolis is a silent film that was made in Germany in 1927. The film is about a dystopian future with a social crisis at the center. Capitalism is at the center of this fight between the workers and the owners.

While you’re watching the film Stephen Warner will be providing the soundtrack on the Senate Theater’s Wurlizter Organ.

The theater has also partnered with Detroit Gatsby and invite everyone who is attending to dress up in clothing from the 1920s. Anyone who dresses in this era will receive a free small popcorn and will be entered to win one of two $50 gift cards to Pasquale’s in Royal Oak.

The Senate Theater is at 6424 Michigan Avenue – Detroit, MI 48210

January City Wide SOUP – Detroit

If you’re looking for something fun to do, that will also have a positive impact on someone trying to do something in Detroit you really need to get to Detroit SOUP this Sunday night.

Detroit SOUP is a group of people who come together to eat, listen to people’s proposals, and then vote on who should receive the money they have collected from the evening. If this sounds like fun you should totally go.

SOUP is a potluck, with a majority of the food being supplied by Foodlab Detroit. Organizers suggest bringing soup, salad, or dessert to contribute to the large group. (There is usually between 150-200 people who come to these SOUP events.)

They ask for a donation of at least $5 to attend the SOUP. At the end of the night everything that is raised goes to who ever gets the most votes.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and the evening wraps up around 9 p.m.

Detroit SOUP is located at 2900 E Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan 48202
